It's kinda funny how everyone thinks Skyward Sword was the first game to feature a stamina gauge...

only because of how utterly bad Skyward Sword was.

Skyward wasn't so bad it was just everyone finally got sick of how linear Zelda had gotten. (I was already sick of it before Twilight Princess came out, but it took awhile for everyone else to catch on.) I'd also say even though Skyward isn't the best Zelda it might be the best game with motion controls.

I'm not sure what either of those things has to do with stamina gauges, but I never really minded the linearity of Zelda games...As long as there was other content for me to enjoy, I couldn't have cared less. Personally, I think a lot of people are just overembracing the idea of non-linearity, to the point where they just assume that they've always wanted it a lot more than they really did.

It's not like every game has to be an aimless open world, and every game does have to be somewhat linear if it wants to have an ending. But it bugs me so much when games prevent you from wandering off. Like when you can't freely sail until you finish the Forest Haven in Wind Waker, or being blocked off by the twilight in Twilight Princess.

I can see what you mean. After all, games like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and even The Wind Waker did allow you a lot of freedom to explore despite your current objective. I guess I just hadn't considered that a surplus of extra-linear games like Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and the DS games would've left people with a desire for something like Breath of the Wild.
