Your Animal Crossing town is cylindrical. It's round in the north (& south) direction, flat to the east (& west). The easiest way to see that the earth is a sphere is by seeing photos from space or looking from a high airplane. Most other proofs, dating from ancient times, come from observations of stars & time by travellers on ships.

The Earth is round, if it were flat cats would have knocked everything off the edge by now. As for the game maps, there not enough information to really know. :)
