I want an answer to a question.

Why is it other fighting series like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, and Soul Calibur have various things like gimmicky fighters clones people don't mind them too much, yet when Smash does them people get mad? What makes Smash so special about this?

  • It may boil down to the fact that they could have thought have something better for these Smash characters movesets. Example: Dark Pit has several of his own unique weapons in Uprising yet uses the exact same moves as Pit. Dr Mario has virtually the same Final Smash as Mario with different visuals. And what also doesn't help is that NONE of his moves utilise the viruses in any form.

  • Yet people accept Shadow Jago from Killer Instinst and most if not all the clone characters in Tekken have a devoted fanbase.

  • Perhaps arcade fighters are harder to program than Smash Bros. fighters?

  • I think with Smash, people want to see throwbacks to previous non-smash games in their movesets. Ganondorf still clings to alterations of Captain Falcon's moveset, when they could have him using the sword he was stabbed with in Twighlight Princess, or more usage of his manipluative magic. But at this point that would be extremely tricky to do without upseting Ganondorf mains.

  • I don't know much about KI Uprising, but from what I hear, they didn't capitalize on Dark Pit's weaponary and tools. It would be easier to change him to new moveset that still stays true to his character in Uprising, because those who don't agree with it can simply go back to Pit to play as.

  • But anyway, sorry for getting off topic, it's mostly about the missed potential that a clone could have had. I think it would be easier to explain with a character that you want in Smash. So, Andrew, name a character that you would love to see in the next game, and I'll make the best comparison I can from there.

  • It's different from those examples of fighting games you gave?

  • In Smash Bros. clones are made either because they had more time to add less unique fighters(Sm4sh) or because they didn't have enough time to make more unique fighters(Melee).

  • Well in Tekken the characters Kuma and Panda, despite being different backstory and personality wise, are basically the same character, yet fans love them. Plus, Mokujin, a beloved Tekken fighter, has no moveset of his own, he basically copies everybody.

  • Well, you can't really call Panda a Kuma 'clone' considering she's an Alt for Kuma rather than a seperate character on the select screen (except for Tag Tournament 2). Also, Mokujin isn't really a clone character. He's more of a 'random' character considering how his moveset fluctuates between the roster.

  • And as for the shotokans in Street Fighter, the 'offspring' characters in Soul Calibur 5 and Shadow Jago in Killer Instinct, they're not exactly 'clones' so to speak, since these characters all have some unique moves of their own and expand on the existing concepts of the fighters they are based on.
