Story vs Gameplay.

The best games of all time are the ones who fulfill both of these aspects as flawlessly as possible. But which do you think is more important and for what reason? Personally, I can forgive a mediocre story if the gameplay is good, but if the gameplay is bad, I don't even care how good the story is.

  • I agree completely. After all, you're PLAYING in any video-game... so the gameplay has to be good or else it's just like you're reading an "animated" storybook

  • The gameplay is always more important in games that don't set out to primarily be interactive stories (Telltale, Life is Strange, Dear Esther, etc.). Those sorts of games can have forgivably bad gameplay, but are completely undermined with a bad story.

  • An odd inversion I can think of is Deadly Premonition. I think it was said that the gameplay was kind of mediocre when it was first released, but it amassed quite a following due to its story and overall bizarreness.

  • I don't think any one aspect of game design is more universally more important than others, rather it's dependent on the genre or franchise in question. For example, story is undoubtedly normally more important in a Visual Novel than in a Platformer. In general, I think the most important aspect of game design, is, wherever the developers decide to focus on, said area has to be well-implemented.

  • I want to point out, ace attorney has mediocre gameplay, but this is irrelevant because the story/characters/humor/soundtrack/... are done very well. To prove my point: Penalties (esp. in 2/3/4) are nothing but a bother. I end up making saves after every minute or so to not lose all progress. "Showing" hitbox is sometimes too small. Medium to severe lack of hints (Layton does this well). >

  • Confusing objectives (like pressing statements twice or pressing a statement after pressing a later statement. - The game likes to point out you need to object when you have all clues and this tends to confuse me. Travelling back and forth to find that one thing you're missing... Overall i get stuck on these things and need a guide with spoilers to continue.

  • Unless you're Metroid: Other M. Apparently, the story was so bad that nobody cared about the great gameplay.

  • There are certainly games where the focus is more on the story, Heavy Rain being one that comes to mind. But when people say old school games such as Castlevania 1-4, Zelda 1&2 and classic Mega Man are awful, because the story isn't up to today's standards, they have certainly missed the point of why people love these games.

  • It depends. Story is definitely a bigger thing nowadays than it was before, but Gameplay is just as important. Considering how they are so even with each other, it's hard to come to a decisive overall answer, so I'd say that it depends on the game.

  • Competitive games really embody gameplay over story and I enjoy them. Even though some have good stories half of the time that stuffs not in game, think TF2 with it's comics or Overwatch with it's comics/ Pixar level animations. I'm sure most people don't even know TF2's lore because it's nowhere to be seen in game. Sm4sh doesn't even have a story. SF lore sometimes looks like Saturday cartoons

  • I guess it really depends what a game is trying to do, is it a cinimatic journey or a skill based contest between players, maybe its even a journey for you to explore a world unrestricted by a character's ideas but rather your own

  • Honestly it depends. The previously mentioned other M's story was so bad that it ruined the game for some people. I think which aspect of a game is more important depends on how much the game in question wants you to focus on an aspect of the game. If a game expects you to care about the story than not having a good one drastically detracts from the experience.

  • The Telltale games for instance depend on a good story because the gameplay is just well clicking things. Other series however make it clear that a game is just that, a game. The Mario series for is considered one of the greatest game series of all time because it has fantastic gameplay while the story doesn't matter in the slightest. Overal though i'd say (gameplay > story)

  • If all I wanted a good story i'd read a book.
