Magical Girl Noel and the Fragmented sword Chapter 1: Departures and Arrivals Noel's eyes opened, she looked around bleary-eyed, blinking to clear the sleep from her eyes. To her left, her Aunt Gillian sat in the aisle seat, her eyes were closed, glasses askew, in a deep, drug-assisted sleep. Noel poked Aunt Gillian in the arm. "Aunt Gil." Aunt Gillian grunted, her head lolled back, mouth

  • she and Danny had live, if not exactly normal, but definitely happy, lives together with their Mom and Dad in a small town in Iowa. But then the accident happened, a freak storm had sent her parents' car rolling off the road, and down a particularly steep hill, and they died. Leaving a thirteen year old daughter and 4 year old son alone. "Papa..." Then came Aunt Gillian, her mother, Jesse's

She had come to take them home with her, all the way in Tokyo, Japan, where she taught at a local university. Growing up fairly poor, Noel and Danny had never been out of the state, let alone out of the country, so there was quite a bit of work to be done. So much, in fact that Noel's 14th

It was just her and Danny now (well, Aunt Gillian too, but she had never liked Papa marrying her little sister when she was 19, so Noel didn't really count her), so Noel wanted to be the best big sister she could, and be there for Danny when he

Something touched her shoulder, and she turned to see that Aunt Gillian was awake at last, she was smiling down at her, and Noel realized that she had taken her sleeping brother's hand without thinking, but she didn't let go. "Looks like we should be arriving soon." yawned Aunt Gillian, checking her watch which read 4:23 pm. Her Aunt had said it was always set to Tokyo time, which

"Not really," said Noel, "Just ocean, ocean, and more ocean as far as the eye can see. Y'know I'm kinda sick of the ocean." Aunt Gillian laughed, "Well, sorry, Noel, you'll just have to get used to it

She shot a glare at her Aunt and noticed that parts of her short, brown hair stuck out in awkward bunches, probably from sleeping for hours in an uncomfortable plane chair. Noel snorted, trying her best not to laugh, Aunt Gillian stared at her, "What?"

  • "Nothing." "Okay." Aunt Gillian eyed her niece suspiciously, "Well, then you should probably wake your brother up, We'll be seeing land soon, he'll probably want to be awake for that." Noel stared out of the window at the sky, and down into the endless ocean, wondering where this new life they're starting would take them. Somewhere good, she hoped. **************************************

  • Meanwhile, in another universe entirely, Azrath had spent the last few hours perusing through ancient text and dusty old books, trying to figure out a way through Urzuran's walls that kept the universes separate, but so far, there was nothing, not a hint of a solution. He thew a scroll down in frustration, they landed on a pile of papers, which exploded, sending dust everywhere.

  • Coughing, Azrath took a step back, and tripped on a large stack of books, this time his wings didn't open in time, and he crashed into a shelf, knocking the entire thing over, luckily, the next set of shelve were far enough away that the first set fell without a problem. Azrath lay on his back, wings spread wide, nothing hurt but his dignity. A piece of paper fluttered down to land on his face,

How he got to be a blacksmith, he had no idea what his father saw in him. He glanced down at the piece of paper which had been part of the dusty stack that had caused all this mess in the first place. It was blank. He let it fall to the ground and

As he stacked he looked at every page, skimmed through every book he came across, but there was nothing. Until he came upon a particularly large, old book with a title so faded, he couldn't read it. Curious, he opened it, the book immediately fell open to the middle of the pages due to the

Azrath wondered why this tear in the spine intrigued him, but he touched an index finger to the tear and pushed ever so slightly. It gave slightly, but his finger was too large to fit completely inside. Struck with inspiration, Azrath switched

The feather went completely through the tiny tear and back out again, he dropped both the book and the feather as the idea finally came to him: Tears. Urzuran had created the portals by creating large tears in his walls, but what if there were

But the walls were not physical walls, they were magic, so in order to pass through them... then... he needed to have less magic, in which case he definitely needed the sword.
