"I hate over-powered villains, even more when they have gigantic egos that are totally justified given the scope of their abilities." A yt comment I saw. And I agree with it. overpowered characters are boring, because they have no conflict that makes us interested in the character or fight.

  • Even when they are the conflict that the heroes have to stop?

  • Great point, but not when the story is mainly about them. Like Doctor Doom. He can take on Superman. His powers are kinda boring when you realize how overpowered he is.

  • Overpowered protagonists even more.

  • Sounds kind of like one of my OCs; I try to balance everything out, though, when it comes to him- like he doesn't ALWAYS win despite the ridiculous amount of powers he has. Whenever he loses, it's usually on account of his big ego and tendency to get distracted. Having characters who win ALL the time is just boring...It's more fun, in my opinion, to write about failure and my OCs react.

  • Agreed! :)

  • Sometimes overpowered characters can still be entertaining. Superman works because of his kindness and need to do good, he makes for a good role model. Dr. Doom becomes interesting when you find out the reason he wants to take over the world is because he wants to save the planet from suffering and want.

  • Hmm, guess you're right. I just found him boring at first because his powers were so unrealistic.

  • @Andrew Good point! Overpowered characters are typically a problem in fanfictions and roleplays; they make them rather boring and unbearable to read/participate in. One time, I was doing a Paper Mario roleplay, and this one kid brought out his OC, "Scar." Scar was a black and red dragon-bird who could breathe power, fly, and turn into every single animal. None of us could lay a

  • finger on "Scar" during this one battle scene; the kid always had our attacks miss him or he had Scar dodge them. I was beyond overjoyed when he dropped out of the RP.

  • To me, powers are not the most important part of a character. They're a part of who they are, but what matters to me is their personality and backstory. Doom can possibly considered a well-intentioned extremist, but part of what makes him fascinating is his pride and ego. That's a core part of a character, their flaws.

  • I agree with this. I have an OC that is very powerful but not extremely. When he gets a huge power source then he's basically overpowered at that point but I make it where there is always a way to dodge his attacks and make the almost unavoidable attacks very weak. Then when you attack for awhile, he gets so tired from that, that he cant even attack anymore. Then he would lose in a fair way.
