Zelda: Breath of the Wild timeline thoughts. What can I say? I wound up thinking about the timeline yesterday and wanted to share my thoughts with everyone. Please note that I’m not saying anyone who doesn’t share my views about Breath of the Wild’s position in the timeline is wrong, they may wind up being right once the game comes out, this are just my personal thoughts as of now.

So to cut to the chase, three things that caught my eye in the footage of Breath of the Wild we’ve seen so far consist of Hyrule’s Culture, Geography, and Link himself. My train of thought had me looking at those three aspects of the game and using what I observed to narrow down what part of the timeline seems most likely to me, between the unified segment, and the splits following…

…Ocarina. Looking at it that way, what struck me as intriguing about Hyrule’s culture this time around were the numerous references to Hylia and the Sheikah. While I can’t come up with many explanations regarding Hylia’s renewed popularity, to me, the Sheikah pointed towards the fallen hero timeline and A Link to the Past onward, since there’s very little mention of the tribe in…

…the Child and Adult timeline branches. That said, in terms of Geography, I found myself noting the position of the Master Sword a lot. It personally seems to me that it’s located in the Lost Woods, as opposed to the Temple of Time like it was in Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess, which again points towards the decline timeline to me. Along with this, Hyrule Castle seems very…

…isolated from the rest of the world of Hyrule this time around, a trait it shares with fallen hero games like A Link to the Past, A Link Between Worlds, and Zelda II. Finally, looking at Link himself, I think it’s most likely that the Link we’ll play as is one that’s appeared in a prior Zelda game, since it’s stated that he’s been asleep for 100 years, and how he wakes up somewhere titled the…

…Shrine of Resurrection. Granted, this doesn’t help much with determining where Breath of the Wild fits in, but I found it interesting nonetheless. In conclusion, while an argument can be made for any of the four branches of the Zelda timeline, I think Hyrule’s Culture and Geography this time around most likely point to the fallen hero timeline. Moving onward from that front, looking…

…at some other things we saw in footage of Breath of the Wild, a few things jumped out at me, and, before I start mentioning what they are, I feel it would be more efficient if I just jumped to saying that I think Breath of the Wild takes place several hundred years after Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, for various reasons. As I mentioned, Hyrule Castle is very isolated, a trait shared with…

…Zelda II’s geography, the Old Man looks a lot like the King of Hyrule in Zelda II’s manual, so it’s possible he could be a descendant, the Sheikah order would be very well-established by this point, the Master Sword wouldn’t have been used since A Link Between Worlds, explained it’s rusted nature, and this position in the timeline would allow for enough time for…

…all of the technology that Hyrule seems to have in Breath of the Wild, such as the means to bring Link back to life and the Sheikah Towers scattered across the land, and also enough time to account for Hyrule’s huge size (bearing in mind how large Zelda II’s overworld canonically was), while still accounting for its near non-existent population after Calamity Ganon took over, in my…

…opinion. Finally, getting back to Link, as I prior mentioned, I think we’re looking at a Link that’s appeared in a Zelda game before, but was either defeated and revived, or severely hurt and put into a sort of stasis, more likely the latter given the Shrine of “Resurrection”’s name. Personally, I think the Link in Breath of the Wild is the same one as in Skyward Sword, since both are…

…right-handed, there seems to be a renewed interest in Hylia, which is a topic only Skyward Sword Link was exposed to in his past adventures, and, finally, going outside of the game, it would make a lot of business since if the newest Zelda game starred the same Link from the most recent 3D Zelda game, Skyward Sword.

So…yeah, that’s my theory. Honestly? I don’t have much confidence in it, and I’m almost positive I’ll be proven wrong on all accounts when Breath of the Wild finally releases, but, for what it’s worth, if I had to make a guess, that’s what I’m thinking now. Feel free to add your own thoughts, but please remember that this is all for fun, and try not to needlessly argue. Thank you!

i believe its going to be the adult timeline bc, it shows a lot of puddles, lakes & such that can show the drainage of water since in windwaker, hyrule flooded. & calamity ganon could be the 2nd form of the windwaker ganon that link killed. as for the master sword being rusted, that would perfectly explain it. & maybe the master sword was relocated to the lost woods bc hyrule & the temple of time

@ashleyx98: Yeah, you can make a lot of great arguments for post-Wind Waker. The ending of it seemed pretty final for Hyrule in that timeline, but, aside from that, a lot of things point towards Breath of the Wild taking place there. Great observation regarding all the puddles, particularly.

was in ruins explaining the placement of the sword. & i believe we will be seeing link as the hero of time in this game bc instead of zelda sending link back, she instead put him in the shrine of ressurection & he was awoken 100 years later where ganon has been resurrected after the events of windwaker, & the hyrule we see is the flooded hyrule from winwaker. & link being asleep would explain the
