I suppose that would depend on how close to the western US you are, and if you are on a dedicated internet line or a "best effort" one... Seeing as i'm roughly 6,700miles from Tokyo (and Hawaii is approx 3800mi) there's going to be some packet delays locally as well as the whole trip.

I'm somewhere in Oregon, and the internet we have at home is good from what I'm told, so yeah. Still, I rarely experience connection issues, let alone with those in Japan. Even playing with some friends also on the west coast has had hiccups (albeit rare). May or may not have to do with their connection, but I dunno.

I'm in the Kansas City area and I have very good Internet overall. Unfortunately, the delay to Japan is almost a second. That makes the round trip about 2 seconds. That's a serious problem with a game like Splatoon.

Keep in mind, I share a backbone central hub (20mi away) with one of the most heavily populated area in the country. Unless i buy something like a dedicated T-line, i'm stuck on civilian high speed internet. My ping attempts of nintendo's websites today were great; 17ms to 90ms, for jp & com respectively. It's likely the players i'm randomly pairing with… i can't control their connection return.
