Well it didn't happen, Russia is still in the games. No one wants to see a return to the cold war 1980s when USA didn't compete in Russia and In 1984 when Russia didn't compete it is bad for the games. Keep politics out of the games. Ban cheaters for life, there is an American who has cheated twice and is still competing, ban cheaters not nations. The analogy with hooliganism is a logical fallacy

To OP it is not just an opinion it has been decided already Russia remaining competitors are taking part and it is you who cannot accept the decision has been made, so it is you opinion which is out of line.

  • @Emilia No it's right, according to the mclaren report (the Russian sports ministry, the Russian security service the FSB, and the Centre of Sports Preparation of National Teams of Russia CSP)

  • @MAX Welp I definitely don't wanna argue with someone here on Miiverse about it lol but in fact the IOC decided to NOT decide as they just gave the responsibility of each sport federation to ban or not russian competitors, which is totally different

  • also I agree the analogy with hooliganism is pretty bad but the one with the cold war isn't better imo because it's not a country boycotting the games for political reasons but just a country cheating and some international organisations taking care of them And indeed cheaters should be ban for life then we would avoid other countries organising national doping system

  • Well unfortunately it's not possible to ban every single individual who has been part of this scandale, since it has been going on to an extent where people aren't even sure about the total number of suspects. Obviously it would be an ideal solution, but I do understand the IOC here. If you could measure morality, it would, in my opinion, be equally incorrect by the IOC to not address the problem.

  • My analogy was not formulated to justify any potential suspension, but merely a reminder of how entire nations often have been excluded from sporting events caused by actions of people who together would form a minority when compared to the rest, in this case, the fanbase. Téo is right, let's not discuss this on Miiverse. It's all a matter of opinions and there isn't really a correct solution.

  • Personally, I just hope the Olympics will be enjoyable to watch and follow, despite this divergent jump :)

it is being discussed though, you mean you now longer wish to discuss it which is fine by me, I accepted any decisionto ban whoever not entire nation. I wish everyone a good Olympics.

I have a solution, if a person is caught cheating banned for life.

  • Not quite, the straw man fallacy is when a person ignores another person's starting point and substitutes a distorted or misrepresented version of that position, which I did not.

    Yeahs0
  • I never ignored your position or misinterpreted it, I completely understand where you are coming from, I too dislike the fact that the doping scandal has come to an extent where entire nations are excluded because of actions that not everybody vouches for.

    Yeahs0
  • I did not use the analogy to argue against you, I merely composed an example to illustrate how the unfairness of excluding nations based on other people's actions is caused by a moral dilemma, even if hooliganism has nothing to do with the specific case. It shouldn't be interpreted as an attack towards your argument in the firt place, since I agree with your starting point.

    Yeahs0
  • A ban for life would work in the theory yes, but how exactly would you justify it when it has been going on for ages without the existence of a similar punishment?
