notice how when sonic unleashed has gameplay that plays nothing like a sonic game it's the worst thing ever but when sonic adventure 2 does it and makes it 2/3 of the game it's suddenly okay

    At least Unleashed gave you access to tons and tons of combos, leveling, and more than 3 enemies to fight. Adventure 2 has a few (meaningless) upgrades, Knuckles/Rogue stages were a step down from Adventure 1's, the same few enemies are reused for the entire game, and constant "EEEEEEEEEEE" from the lock-on sound in Tails/Eggman levels.
