Super Mario Bros. 3

I was playing Super Mario Bros. 3 when I accidentally went into a level with a black "Spade". As the level loaded, I saw this weird looking Mario! Why didn't Nintendo create a version of this level for the Virtual Consle release with in game sprites, and not these new ones?
