  • "And the equations that describe one? Form the basis of all trigonometry!" 'Ah! Okay, now I definitely have to take this job.' Lottie, you're … a fan of trigonometry? 'If it wasn't for trig, tiger, you wouldn't even be able to see me! Or the people watching wouldn't, anyway.' I thought we talked enough about engines in yesterday's episode. "What are you two talking about?" 'Ah … Trains!' Y-yeah …

  • Here we go. Nice round part of the river. I'm guessing you like that. "Well … it really isn't a perfect arc, is it?" Huh? Of course it isn't. You don't find perfect circles in nature. "Oh? It's still … nice, I guess …" … So, I'm guessing you're a math student. "Yes, I'm in my … Hey, do you draw, Lottie?" Y-yeah, I sketch things out sometimes. I'm not nearly as good as my stepdad, but …"

  • "Oh, good. Maybe you can help me with a problem I've been having." With drawing? "Yes. I really want to be able to draw a perfect circle, but I can never quite get it right." Then buy a compass. Problem solved, right? "That's not really … drawing one, is it?" … Okay, why do you want to draw circles freehand? Aside from having a vague obsession with them? "I-I'm not … THAT obsessed …"

  • "Well, when you draw something complicated, like a person, you usually start with circles, right? A big one for the head, a couple for the body, stretched out ones for the limb segments …" You're talking about construction shapes? Yeah, they're useful if you're still learning proportions, but there are lot of artists who can just eyeball them. I'm guessing you're working through tutorials, huh?

  • "Yeah, but I always get stuck at the first step. That's my problem." Wait, really? "I just can't do it! Every single time, there's something wrong with it! The curvature's weird, or the ends don't meet up, or it's all squished." You understand you need to erase those as you work, right? It doesn't have to be perfect. "Yes it does! If I don't start right, it's all going to be wrong!"

  • "And … and if I can't even draw something as simple as a circle right, how can I draw anything else? It's very frustrating." Ah, I get it. You got a nasty case of perfectionism. "It's not bad to want to make things as good as possible …" I guess in math that kind of fastidiousness comes in pretty handy. But in art? That kinda attitude will keep you from doing anything!

  • "That's easy for you to say. You can draw really good circles, can't you?" Nope! Mine are crummy too. "Huh? But you said …" Two things. First, drawing circles freehand isn't "simple". It's really hard! You can't just use your wrist or your elbow: It takes a ridiculous amount of coordination between a whole buncha different arm muscles. We're just not built for it! "Th-then how can I …"

  • And second, it doesn't matter! Art is all about iteration! "Iteration? You mean assuming n, prove for n+1?" Uh … not that kind. I mean the secret to making good art is to start with BAD art and keep making it better! If it doesn't look right? That's not bad, that's great! It means you can identify what's not working and fix it!

  • Say you really do want to make a nice circle. You can't get frustrated because it doesn't look perfect the first time. You see where you went wrong, then you draw another circle right on top of it. Fix up parts of the arc until you're happy with it. Then you erase everything that isn't the circle, and there you go! Circle! You wanna draw something more complex? It's the exact same process!

  • "So a perfectionist can't be a good artist, then …" Well, you can still be really, really, REALLY finicky in fixing it up. But there's no reason get frustrated. Not liking what's on the page doesn't mean you're a bad artist, Peaches, it just means you're not done yet. But giving up? Or just … bashing your head against a blank page? THAT would make you a bad artist. "Oh. That does make sense …"

  • "I guess I was just too worried about being wrong. But I suppose being wrong is okay if it helps you become right. So I'm just going to keep practising until my drawings are perfect! Thank you so much, Lottie!" Heh, no problem. And be sure to send me some of your sketches when you feel comfortable sending them out. It's a lot easier to improve when you get honest feedback. "I will. Thank you!"

  • All dome! You can stop by Peaches' place at HHN address 0496-5765-222, or by scanning that QR code. Have fun designing, everyone! "Can I see some of your sketches?" Sure! I keep a small pad with me. Here. "Wow, these are nice! Are they … all of the same person?" The same … Ah! I forgot the Digby drawings! "Ah, that's so swee…" … "O-oh dear. Why did you draw …" You can give it back now.
