I just learned that in New York City, it's straight-up ILLEGAL to not call someone by their "preferred pronouns." This is how far the world has sunken, and it sure doesn't show any signs of stopping.

  • I take it that if you get it wrong without knowing what their preference is, you'd still get in trouble?

  • @Eric I'd imagine so. I'm sure there are at least some sensible trans out there that are reasonable enough to correct me if I get their preferences wrong, but how long will it be before I need to start every conversation with "Hi whats your gender?"

    Yeahs5
  • Like I needed ANOTHER thing to annoy me in NY! Ugh, I'm gonna get arrested aren't I? I can see how it will play in jail. Me: "What are you in for?" Prisoner 1"Armed assault" Me: "What about you?" Prisoner 2"Dealing "stuff" in a dark alley. What about you?" Me: "Not using the proper pronoun" *Gets shived on the spot*

  • Just to vent out what I've got to deal with/hate: -Bums that wreak of death in the subways -Bums asking for money -Incredibly rude people that'll fight you for a parking spot or a seat -Times Square -Tourists -Public transportation being awful constantly -The projects, Harlem, and brooklyn. - And now this preferred pronoun nonsense. I hope its like the law for jaywalking. Irrelevant.

    Yeahs7
  • ...Honestly this law is just another reason why I personally don't like the idea of people being transgender, at least from an appearance standpoint. I can respect that they just wanna be who they wanna be, but it usually leads to confusion at some point. The fact that that same confusion can now get people in trouble with the law is completely absurd.

  • From what I've read, this law applies to employers and landlords and things like that. Not to random people talking to each other on the street.

    Yeahs9
  • What's my gender

    Yeahs0
  • @JesSwitch: It's still a law that shouldn't exist, don't even try to justify it.

  • I've honestly just put myself into the mode of, "whatever" with this stuff. I'll do it to be respectful, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with it. BTW one of my best friends is trans and he finds SJWs a nuisance.

  • @Eric I'm not trying to justify it or defend it. I'm just saying it doesn't actually reach as far as people are insinuating in this discussion, and you don't have to worry about the particular situations described happening. Just because I disagree with it doesn't mean I'm going to go ahead and paint it as something even worse than it really is. I'm still concerned with what the actual facts are.

    Yeahs3
  • @JesSwitch Well, that's somewhat of a relief. Still, though, I hope that such a law continues to stay exclusive to NYC.

    Yeahs2
  • then just refer to people how they want to be called by yea its a lil extra (im sure this is more enforced for like... i dunno employers and anti-discrimination laws?) but you shouldnt even worry abt it if ur a respectable and open-minded person lol

    Yeahs0
  • now that i read my post i sounded a little jerkish but what im trying to say, ur not actually gonna get arrested if u call someone by the wrong pronoun if they tell you, "oh man sorry i prefer to go by 'she' instead of 'he'" then just apologize and such they're not gonna freakin' call the cops bc some rando just referred to them by the wrong pronoun

    Yeahs0
  • I have a word for stuff like this. *French accent* G A R B A G E

    Yeahs3
  • You have a source for that?

    Yeahs0

  • @Connor Look it up yourself. I can't post external links here.

I would really like to say my opinion on this, but I'm pretty sure most of Miiverse would disagree, so I'll stay out of it. I wish there was a way to do so without coming across as overly defensive.
