review time! this game was amazing. an absolute blast to play. like with GV1, i felt like i was playing Megaman again. if you played GV1 or know common sense in playing Megaman, you'll get a grip on the unique aspects of the game rather quick. Copen's inclusion was my favorite addition. his gameplay was hard to learn, but it's fun to jump dash everywhere.

    Copen's copy ability actually had me using the boss abilities every time. they weren't situational or just for boss weaknesses and that's a good thing.

    Inti Creates actually listened to the feedback of the first game and improved a lot of my criticisms. the challenges are always active and you don't have to accept them to do them, you can see a list of obtainable materials before going to levels and my favorite is giving you options on how you want the conversations be presented. on, off, with or without voices, or change the opacity of the text.

    and the way the story is presented is much better. the dialogue is leagues better than the first game. a personal nitpick i had before was the dumb made up swear words or the characters trying too hard to sound cool. the localization, added voice acting, and gameplay conversations were a great addition and it was done well here.

    as for lenght, it felt short because i played non-stop cause i was having fun, but i believe this was the perfect length. the game is long enough that it doesn't overstay its welcome. i was worried that having GV and Copen sharing levels between them would hurt the experience, but it worked in the end.

    finally, the story. not gonna spoil it, but in all honesty...the story was between great and plain good. it's very anime, over the top, silly and the game knows this. so it takes advantage of this. as a stand-alone game, it's a sequel in it's true definition. if you want to understand what anything is, the game demands that you had already played the first game and know of its lore beforehand.

    you can play and get involved with the story here, but to understand the plot twists, character motivations, and appreciate specific details, you need some of the added baggage of the first game.

    in terms of the amiibo support, you can scan a Shovel Knight amiibo to have a boss fight against him. however, i don't care for amiibo and don't know anything of Shovel Knight to care, so i can't elaborate on it. but who knows? maybe they can add other amiibo fights. i mean, come on. GV Vs Mewtwo. i'd pay to see that.

    closing thoughts: as a fan, this game exceeded my expectations. but i still recommend this even if you haven't played the first game. sometime in early October, they'll release a collection that holds both games, and if you want to get in on this, i say get the collection. it's a better deal.
