Why don't people use Diddy Kong on FG?

I just find it strange that a top tier like him would be such a rarity in FG, since he doesn't have a particularly high learning curve. Whereas Mario, Cloud, and ZSS to a lesser extent run rampant.

  • I play him once in a while.

  • I typically run into a Diddy player at least once every night I play. But then, I've almost never caught a glimpse of the bow-spamming Link, so my FG experience is obviously highly unique.

  • So do I, though I use him sparingly, since people tend to SD when I play him, especially if they're using a heavyweight. They just don't like getting combo'ed.

  • @Ed How is it that you haven't faced the infamous projectile spamming Link?

  • I have no idea. I encounter plenty of Links who love their Boomerang, they just never use that mythical strategy of rolling from ledge to ledge and using B exclusively. Of course, now that I've said this that's all I'm going to see.

  • Here's how a match against Link usually goes: Side B, Down B, B until I get close. Then it's roll towards me, use Up or Down Smash, they get punished, reset to neutral, repeat. I, of course am fortunate enough to have to deal with this nearly every other match.

  • because of his serious nefts. diddy kong was a nightmare in smash before. killing with his "hoohah” combo relatively early. now since they heavily neft him, his playerbase got lower. i used to main him but not anymore.

  • to find the differences. you should play the first diddy kong, you'll easily find how broken he was compered to now. he cant kill or combo like he use to.

  • @james But even before his nerfs I didn't encounter him that much. And he's still really good despite the nerfs.

  • The best part is, since he has been heavily nerfed, nobody can cry foul if I destroy them with him.

  • yeah he's still good, but after i played non-update version, he's easily weaky then before. i gived up on him afterwards. either the nefts or generally hate.

  • Players like to play characters they think is strong even though they aren't really that good. Mario and Cloud has an easier learning curve, but let me talk about this....majority of Link's, Little Mac's, Ness, and Falcon's. None of them are top 15, but are the most used on glory because they have one thing that is powerful about themselves, but don't like to look at their biggest weaknesses.

  • I'm not saying the character I've mentioned isn't good, just not top tier. They like to look at Link's projectile and strong moves, but forgot that he gets combo'ed, poor frame data, etc. Little Mac, smash attack hits hard, comes out fast, super armor, but he can't land, no aeirals, bad recovery. Ness, PK Fire, Backthrow. Weakness, recovery g!mp. Falcon, all around fighter, weakness is combo food

  • @james I think Diddy mostly deserved what he got. The only thing is they may have overnerfed his Up air. It went from being absurdly broken to being almost useless. @Vinson Yeah, that's true. But Diddy's learning curve isn't exactly the highest either.

  • Diddy isn't really that hard, harder than Mario and Cloud, but not that hard in my opinion. I have a solid Diddy.

  • Diddy in top level just play by taking stage control using banana, and grab you or finish with dtilt up smash.

  • Maybe because Diddy doesn't feel powerful anymore. FG players tend to like characters that hit pretty hard. It makes sense. When has dair spiking with Ganon NOT felt satisfying?

Diddy's a relatively weak character in terms of damage and knockback, he's a character that relies on stage control and combos. Since the skillset on FG is so varied and taking into account the FD layout and occasional lag, getting someone who hits hard tends to be the more effective option because their strengths outshine their weaknesses in this environment a good deal of the time.

  • I secondary main Little Mac but I am not the type of Little Mac's on FG and I play with friends more and after fighting my friend IMO diddy is not so good fighting against Bayo so I just have to use Sheik,Fox,and Ryu
