Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice- Something to hold you over Overall, the second (or third) installment in the Sonic Boom series is quite the step up from the first two. Sure, not everything here is perfect, but it's a fairly decent time to be had. This is my review on Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice for the Nintendo 3ds.

  • PRESENTATION: In this department, the game seriously steps up from the first one. The CGI cutscenes look amazing, and the newly added in-game ones aren't too bad. In terms of the actual game itself, it's more or less the same as Shattered Crystal, albeit with a more medieval theme to it, which I think results in some seriously boring level themes.

  • Also, why did the later levels resort to PAINTINGS as the backgrounds? Sure, they look nice, but the fact that they literary LOOP as you progress through the stage isn't fooling no one. Now as for the music, it's kind of a mixed bag. Sonic Boom clearly isn't meant to have some of the catchiest pop and/or rock music you've ever heard, but most people haven't picked up on this yet.

  • My impression is that the music is supposed to make you feel like you're an adventurer, and the game does a good job in that context, I guess...? Some songs had great starts to them, like the very first one that gives you a saturn/dreamcast vibe shortly before bringing out their STUPID rhythms that don't appeal to anyone. Seriously, this occurs CONSTANTLY, and it irritates me!

  • However, there are a few good ones in between, and only one that's surprisingly catchy. I should add that the overworld themes aren't too bad either.

  • ¡GAMEPLAY!: If you've played Shattered Crystal, then the basic controls are mostly the same. However, you now have the Fire and Ice gimmick, which allows you to freeze or melt water to find alternative paths or solve puzzles. Yeah folks, there's ice cubes and blobs of water arbitrarily placed all over stages that don't need them. I can only think of one or two worlds where this could've worked.

  • Added to the roster is now Amy, and she can use her hammer to ascend or descend random pillars... yeah. Sure, the characters have special attacks, but they all have a homing attack along a few upgrades that can kill enemies instantly, not to say that they're all important here, for all they do are occasionly create paths for you and maybe slow you down.

  • Speaking of special attacks, Sonic's has his air dash and vastly improved spin-dash, Tails now has this gun that can make oddly decorated briks disappear, Knuckles has random side attacks, I've already told you about Amy's, and Sticks has her boomerang. BIG SURPRISE.

  • Unlike Shattered Crystal, the stages have now been streamlined into tiny corridors of the bad afterlife with no branching paths whatsoever! Also, you don't need to collect random mcguffins to advance to the next stage. They're optional. However, if you do want those, then you'll have to do some fancy tricks using the character's special attacks AND go through the challenge rooms to get them.

  • The seafox and tunnel levels are also back. Nothing has really changed here although they did up the ante. By that, I mean, they made it more challenging. In the seafox levels, you now have to collect 2 items in these HUGE labyrinths. I find these INFURIATINGLY DIFFICULT due to the outrageous time requirements to beat these levels, I mean 1:10!?

  • The tunnel levels now incorporate the fire and ice functions to either freeze paths or to melt icicles that may get in your way. I forgot to mention that throughout most of your travels that you'll come by these dragon rings whose paths you'll have to follow in order to get more ragnium. Speaking of ragnium, yes, they act as this game's currency.

  • You can use ragnium to buy more bots and tracks for this game's new bot races, upgrades for your characters overall, more concept art for the game and hilariously Sonic Boom season 2 concept art, and most bizarrely different looks for Amy's hammer. They don't do anything; it's just there to look fancy. Overall, it's not great, but it's not bad either.

  • VERDICT: Sonic Boom Fire and Ice is a better attempt at Sanzaru Games trying to make a Sonic game. It seems as if they did try, but it appears not hard enough. Sure, through the okay story, graphics, and music comes out some decent fast-paced gameplay that shpuld hold some people over until Sonic Mania and Project 2017 finally come around. I can somewhat recommend the game to those willing to try.
