No! Dont wait! Kyubi befriends you randomly, so Save before you battle him, so if he doesnt befriend you, you can reset & keep trying until he does.

I think it's the same as slimimander, he befriends you based on how well you battle. The quicker and more efficiently you defeat him, the more likely it is to befriend him. Also, healing your team with food is unacceptable.
