    This might sound strange, but my interpretation of a squid being splatted is kind of like a gem being poofed in steven universe, minus the pain. Like, the little squid thing that flies back to base is the consciousness of the inkling and everything else is just like a mech suit made out of ink or something along the lines of that.

    Invading ink overwhelms them as it is not their ink so they have to splat in order to function again. And because they cannot swim, they release their body made of ink and fly back to base when they fall in water. This is only a hypothesis though. If you have anything to add to this that would be cool!

    @Alysa ☆★☆A ; I really like your interpretation, very interesting. :D I'm always curious what are the exact ways to actual eliminate Inklings once and for all. Like they always come back in a small form of a ghost (somehow, though mostly likely game mechanic purpose). Probably as long the spawn-pad is there, Inklings are temporary immortal (materials like grates can't hurt them).
