Do we expect too much from games?

Are we expecting too much from games? I hear a new, anticipated game is coming out people saying they want open worlds, an immersive story, content that will weeks, music they want to buy immediately, choice, innovative gameplay, superior graphics, etc. and if a game doesn't meet even meet one of those things, it loses some of its credibility.     For example, people complain when a story doesn't provide movie quality and immersion even though actual movies only have to focus on the story, while games have to also focus on gameplay too. If the original "Doom" came out today and played, looked, and had the simple story would it be praised as an awesome FPS game or a sloppy mess due to its basic graphics, simple story, and arcade mechanics?

    Two games that pop into my head are Bioshock 2 and Pokémon. Bioshock 2 was a great game with improved mechanics, visuals, content, music, and even added multiplayer. However, it is considered bad or average by a fair number of people since it went with a simple "save the damsel" story unlike the first game. Continue...

    Pokémon often receives flack for its basic stories, lack of expansive post game, and weak online even though it gives a meaty main game every time with so much exploration. TellTale games often receive criticism for not having much game even though they crank out elaborate stories with tons of choice. Have current gamers' expectations just gotten to the point where companies rarely can meet them?

    Despite how long that speech was... I think the big game that would earn that title would be um... I cannot think of one game that would fit. P.S. I feel like I may have interfered a little bit!     I'm just saying that since we made our topics the exact same time I feel like more people got more interested in my discussion, I sincerely apologize, but I will contribute since I'm a good person. I was going to say Kirby and The Crystal Shards is one that did not reach my expectations.

    The thing is is that this game really did not use the standard formula for gameplay. I know Kirby can transform in some games, but this seems a bit cartoony in my opinion.
