Before I talk about the game in detail, I just want to say that although the game is only at #25, that doesn't mean I don't like this game. I like the game a lot. I just like the other 24 games on this list even better! Now, to get started with the review; Super Mario 3D World is the only 3D Mario platformer released on the Wii U. It's gameplay is similar to Super Mario 3D Land.

While the game is a 3D Mario game, it plays similarly to a 2D Mario game. Rather than collecting multiple stars in open levels, the goal is simply to go through a linear level and reach the flagpole at the end. There are power-ups to find throught the levels that give the player extra abilities, and every level has a timer.

The game also has some new power-ups, like the Cat Bell, which turns the player into a cat who can climb up walls, and a cherry which creates a clone of the player. The game also features a multiplayer mode, where up to four players can play through the game together. This does however lead me to one of the game's problems. The camera. The camera is made to be able to focus on four players.

The problem with that is that even when playing alone, the camera is sometimes zoomed out very far, which usually isn't a problem, but can lead to some hard to judge platforming segments every now and then. Luckily the camera didn't affect my enjoyment of the game too much. There is however one thing that did, and that is that the game doesn't feel very original to me.

The gameplay is very similar to that of Super Mario 3D Land, which is in turn heavily inspired by the gameplay of the 2D Mario games. Due to the amount of New Super Mario Bros. games that have come out in the last decade, this gameplay style doesn't feel as new anymore.

While similar gameplay isn't necessarily a problem if the game still feels like a new adventure, sadly it often feels to me like I'm retreading old ground. The game has the same grass, desert, ice, etc. style of levels as other recent Mario games, and though there are some levels with styles new to the Mario series, like the level based on ancient Japan, those are few and far between.

Although the game's style might not be the most original, it still looks beautiful. This is the best a Mario platformer has ever looked, and the game is filled with beautiful effects, such as the rain in this screenshot. The game's soundtrack is also amazing. The game is filled with catchy tunes.

Another great thing about this game is the amount of content the game has. The game has five playable characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and an unlockable character. Besides the main 8 worlds, there are also a lot of bonus levels. The icing on the cake are the Captain Toad levels. They are really fun puzzle levels in which the player is unable to jump.

To sum up, I think Super Mario 3D World is a really solid platformer with a lot of content, a great soundtrack and great visuals. It does have some problems however, the main problem being that the game feels to similar to previous Mario platformers. Despite that, the game is still fun to play. Thank you for reading my review! Feel free to tell me your opinion of the game here in the comments.

  • Well I agree with most of what you said. For me this game ranks a bit higher though, probably top 5... I'm a huge Mario fan, but I prefer the 64/ galaxy games. They feel more open. Like you say it has more similarities with the 2D mario games. But since this is the closest to an 'open world mario' we'll be getting on Wii U, this is one of my favorites.

I also prefer the more open 3D Mario games. Sunshine is my favourite Mario game. I hope the Mario game for the Switch will be more similar to the open 3D Mario games, but it does look quite similar to 3D World at first glance. Of course, it's only about 7 seconds of gameplay, so it could be very different.

  • I personally prefer this game to New Super Mario U myself.
