There may be interest in noting the forms the bosses take in each territory of Termina and seeing how they may or may not relate to the corresponding story of said area. Consider Odolwa. Described as masked jungle warrior, he exudes pride. His garb suggest he represents a part of a larger tribe, but his actions show that it is vainglory which controls him. He prefers to be seen as a fierce warrior

  • over the actual fighting that defines a fierce warrior. Only a short percentage of his confrontation with Link does he spend attacking or defending. Instead, he spends his time showing off his status of being a warrior. He gives elaborate battle cries, dances about and shows off the sheen of his sword. Even when he is pressed, he does not so much grow more serious about fighting, but rather calls

  • This self-importance finds a natural parallel in the Deku King who, when given the heroic task of rescuing his daughter, chooses the theatrics of doing what 'appears' to be grand and heroic, but makes no progress toward the actual heroic goal. And he too leaves it to his underlings to do his dirty work. He is seen as a king, but (like Odolwa) acts as a figurehead, accomplishing nothing in the end.

  • If Link's goal in Termina is, to paraphrase HMS, to spread happiness, then the Southern Swamp posits that superciliousness as one of the natural evils which suppress happiness. Worth noting then, is how Link overcomes this sort of pride by entering into situations in the swamp where he must show humility.

  • The very first task given to Link upon entering the Swamp is to save Kotake, a former adversary of his. He is made not to exert power over, but to rely on the aid of those less important than him. The old and frail in Kotake, the de facto social outcasts in the monkeys. His journey through the Woods of Mystery involve putting the needs of the forgotten before those of his own.

  • From here the emphasis on appearances receives even greater attention at Deku Palace where admittance is determined based on appearances and the only one who looks pasts these things and asks "who are you" is the one being chained and tortured. This is further symbolized by the photobox contest Link is encouraged to participate in which is literally judged based on appearances.

  • We also see that this focus on pride is resolved by masks which go 'beyond' the limited nature of appearance. The Deku Butler gives the Mask of Scents which is even more significant when one recalls that scent, being the most primitive of the senses, is the sense most connected with emotions and especially the evocation of memories. The spiderhouse man meanwhile gives the Mask of Truth to Link as
