SMM 2016 REFLECTIONS Well, it seems 2016 wasn't one of the best years in the world. But, let's not focus on the year as a whole. Instead, in this post, I'll reflect upon my time in SMM, which I started this year.

  • To start off, I got Super Mario Maker on March of this year. When I first started, I just wanted to make levels for fun. Of course I didn't fully get what made a level fun back then. Then, I started to experiment with different ideas on May. Now, I started to figure out how to improve upon my first few levels.

  • During this period of experimentation, I made my first level series, "Memory Game." It was a simple concept inspired by other memory based levels I played at the time. And I wanted to put my own spin on the formula...slightly. I got reasonable success out of it. But, I continued to come up with new ideas. Some failed, others succeeded.

  • One day, I made a simple level called, "House of Demons." This proved to be a level that I really enjoyed making. It also was the start of my horror level series, featuring a character named Smiley. He was a character I made up and the next 4 levels featured him, with "Smiley's Happiness" explaining his "origins." The other horror levels had him as an easter egg.

  • I considered the series a decent success. But, "Paper Mario Boss Battles" would prove to be my first true success; it got quite a bit of attention. The attention gained was unlike any of my other levels thus far. Then, "Mario's Red Coin Rush" proved to be a bigger success with more plays than the level I previously mentioned. Things were looking good.

  • Then, the next few levels suffered from lower ratings than the previous two levels I mentioned earlier. They didn't get as many plays, but they still were nice to make. I went back to experimentation with those levels, trying to come up with new ideas that didn't really reach the height of success the previous two levels did. Then, it happened.

  • I came up with the concept of combining ten minigames from Mario Party 1 into one level. It was just an idea I had in my head and I thought it would be a nice change of pace. It did gain some success. By that I mean it got a lot of plays much faster than all of my other levels. It became a massive success for me, which I never thought would happen.

  • "Best of Mario Party 1" would launch my most successful level series to date. The "Best of Mario Party" series would have a level each having a set of minigames from a specific home console game in the Mario Party series. Though the ratings would go down slightly, this level series was still a big deal for me. I finally found the level series that would make me stand out from other Makers.

  • When I first started, I only had like 100 stars. Again, I wasn't aiming for high goals. But as I got further along, my star count and amount of plays gradually went up. Today, I got a point I never thought I would ever reach...and it's all thanks to each and everyone of you that have supported my levels through my entire SMM career.

  • Yeah, it's a lot. But, again it's all thanks to all of you. You guys are the reason I stand where I'm at today. Not only that, but engaging with other Makers by participating in their discussions and playing their levels has opened so many connections with other Makers for me. You gave me honest feedback on improving my level design and making my levels more enjoyable to play.

  • You guys have me made feel like I'm a part of this community. Thank you all so much for this opportunity. I have made friends with several Makers and they have made me a better Maker than when I first started. 2016 may have been a bad year for the world, but you guys have made this year an enjoyable experience. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

  • Now, 2017 is a big year, mostly for Nintendo. Their new console, the Switch, may bring them back to their glory days...or make them crash down. Whatever the case might be, I'll be buying one just to open my gaming horizon to new games. And this year is also when I wrap up my time in Mario Maker. And I got my plans sorted out.

  • First off, I plan on making and releasing only three more levels before I call quits. During that time, I'll host a tournament that serves to wrap up Mario Maker, if it does end & if there will be no Switch port. Like they always say, all good things must come to an end. But, for the time being let's focus on the present.

  • You deserve your stars, because your levels are well made. I remember being a bit critical with your early courses, but you didn't take it as an insult, instead you improved your courses.
