Finished projects are always better than cancelled ones

Considering the surprise announcement yesterday of the cancellation of Scalebound [a pet project of Platinum Games, which was in full development for ~4 years]. It goes to show how remarkable an achievement it was that Itagaki & Valhalla Game Studios managed to finish and release Devil's Third on Wii U.

  • In the specific context of Devil's Third: we all had our chances to play it and to enjoy the game for what it was. P.S. The single-player campaign will always be available.

  • Such a pity Scalebound was the only exclusive outside of Forza Horizon that I was really interested in on Xbox One, hopefully this won't effect the future of Platinum Games, who generally make fantastic games.

  • Maybe someone else could pick it up and fund platinum to finish scalebound? maybe Nintendo? They have a good history together and they probably won't try to interfere as much as microsoft.

  • It is sad to hear the Japanese version is shutting down it servers in March, as for a future in Europe and the US that is still uncertain.

  • It would be nice for Nintendo to pick up Scaleborn, but I think they would have scale back the technology for it to work on the Switch, as the Switch seems to be technologically inferior to Sony's and Microsoft's current consoles.

  • The big trouble for Scalebound is the Intellectual Property rights. Highly unlikely that MS, P.G. and another party could reach the kind of deal that returns it to development. There's probably no money/energy at boardroom level & it's over. MS have a record of doing this e.g. stopping Fable Legends, leading to the closure of Lionhead.

  • Here is my take on the Switch: I have no interest in getting the Switch this year. The announced game library doesn't appeal enough. Paid online really sucks. Day 1 Bomberman is a good sign, much more important than Zelda! Monolith Soft better not mess up Xenoblade 2. But I am someone who needed to buy into the Commodore Amiga, the Sega Dreamcast, or Nintendo Wii U (those were mine).

  • So my prediction is that the Switch will be a big success, despite its very high price (or maybe because of it? people truly are weird) Maybe sales figures get close to the original Wii, as impossible as that seems.

  • The price does seem a bit steep, especially without any games. The paying for online is another negative. I too will wait and see, some of the games do looking interesting. I had a Commodore Amiga, some good games (and sound demos). I do not miss floppy disks.

  • Yes, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis was about 12 disks, so much switching...*shudders*...

  • Atari ST for me Farticus with Operation Stealth on about 8 discs. No Switch for me, its probably what the Wii U should have been and the launch seems to be a Wii U "rinse & repeat".

  • The Switch seems to expensive, especially without any games. For a little more you could get a PS4 or Xbone with a few games. They need the Switch to be a cheap alternative like the Wii was for it be successful. I hope the Switch does well, but with the current price I can see it following the same path as the Wii U.

  • Just noticed what the rrp are on the games, £60 for Zelda on Switch? Shouldn't carts be cheaper? The price for it's peripheral's are too expensive. What are Nintendo thinking?

  • They saw the failure of PS Vita, with it's over-priced memory cards, and thought: Yes, the World needs more of THAT! Only joking, I still think the Switch will be a big success. My reasoning? (1) conventional wisdom is consumers want to play Nintendo games but don't like the hardware. Switch was designed to address that (it is modern, industrial). (2) the new BRAND (name, logo) is very strong.

  • If everybody's main complaint is about the pricing structure, that might be a good sign (at this stage).
