My Bowie Story: I was once a member of Bowie's now-defunct ISP, BowieNet. He was writing and recording a new album, '...hours', and decided to hold a songwriting contest. The winner's lyrics would be featured on the album. I'd spent so much time listening to his music that I felt I could write a song in the Bowie mould, one that complimented his vocal style, cadence, etc. More below.

  • I took a day to tweak the lyrics prior to uploading them. I expected nothing; I was just a kid having some fun. Well, imagine my surprise when I logged on a few days later and saw a private message from the man himself! I was almost afraid to read it. To my relief and amazement, it was extremely complimentary. He claimed that the lyrics were a great match for the music and themes on the album.

  • He asked me a few questions and appeared genuinely interested in my background. I responded that I was just a teenager that appreciated his music. He wrote back and said I had a promising career as a lyricist. The winner was chosen not by Bowie but by the community. I didn't win. However, a fellow user close to Bowie later informed me that he recorded an alternate version with my lyrics.

  • The song is called "What's Really Happening?" It's on YouTube if you're curious. Given the recent interest in Bowie's catalogue, there's a small chance that my version could eventually be unearthed and released. Even if that never happens, I'll forever be astonished and grateful that the artist behind "Ziggy Stardust," "The Man Who Sold the World," and "Heroes" once sang my lyrics.
