Thinking about getting this game...

This will be my first batman game, actually no I had owned a lego batman game for the DS. My questions are, are you able to roam free in the city? Do frame rates ever drop so bad that it makes the game no fun? Which characters can you use and can you use them in the beginning of the game? Is there an online mode?
