"But you don't know how. It's understandable. Mr. Nook has a lot of sadness built up over the years." Yeah. I figured if I introduced him to the right person, someone who could be there for him … Well, love makes everything better, right? But I don't even know if he'd be interested, let alone his type. … "That is what you believe?" Huh? Yeah, I believe in love. "Interesting."

"I have cared for many people in my century of life. Yet in retrospect, most of them are worse off for having known me." Th-that's different! That was just a … twisted, abusive interpretation of best-friendship. I mean romantic love! "Beyond the fact I am incapable of that kind of love, I do not see much difference. Any love can comfort and enrich someone, but also create much conflict and pain."

"It is powerful, yes, but no panacea. And in Mr. Nook's case, I suspect its complication would be unwelcome." Yeah, that's … basically what he said. "Have you considered other approaches?" I keep drawing a blank, really. That's why O came to you. You've known him a lot longer than I have. "And you think I can help?" Can you? … "I don't know."

"On the one hand, I am a golem. My emotions are entirely goal-directed. When I work toward or fulfill a task, I am happy. When I fail a task, I am sad. When I encounter an obstacle, I become angry or afraid. Happiness should be easy for me to achieve, and yet … all I've been feeling lately is confused." Confused? "My current task is to be a good person. So I've been reading a lot of philosophy."

Yeah, that's a a natural reaction … Wait, reading? "Yes, in Braille. Miss Waddler has been kind enough to help me find appropriate books." Oh. That's nice of her. "At first I was happy to learn. It felt like I was making real progress. I think Kant made a lot of sense at first." Now that's a sentence you don't hear … ever.

"I'm serious! Categorical imperatives really spoke to my rule-based nature. Until I found authors happy to point out it flaws. Then authors arguing the flaws in those authors' works. And so on." Yeah, arguing is pretty what philosophers live for. "Then there really is no agreement?" Nope. You kinda have to … pick which system feels best to you, I guess. "I was afraid of that."

"Golems are not so different from animals as people like to think. But the one thing I cannot do, that you can, is define myself. I would not have studied philosophy at all if it did not serve the task Mr. Nook gave me. And yet …" And yet what? … "A lot of morality is concerned with happiness. Becoming happy, making others happy, increasing happiness in the world. It was surprising."

"Yet I felt like I was approaching it backwards. It was the study that was supposed to bring happiness to me, not the knowledge itself. But neither seemed to help, until … Jean-Paul Sartre." Sartre? Existentialism appeals to you? "It fascinates me. The idea that life has no innate meaning, that no external force can define a person. It runs completely against the way I understand the world, yet …"

"… I think … it helps me understand why I want it so desperately." It? "To be my own master. Or maybe something more than that: To be able to … be without a task, and do something beyond asking for another. To live for myself. That … might be what it means to be a person." Is that even possible for you, though? If your task defines even your emotions … "Do you know what a tsukumogami is, Lottie?"

Sooka… what? Is that something you do with paper? "It's … nothing, really. Just a thought. Anyway, I'll see if I can come up with some ideas to help Mr. Nook." That seems … sudden. "I'm sorry, but it is getting late. I really must be getting back to my studies." Huh? Yeah, I guess you're right. Bye, Stitches. "I'll talk to you again, Lottie!"

… "And no, I am not going to talk aloud to myself the moment I think you're out of earshot. Sorry." Aw, why do you have to know me so well? "Goodbye, Miss Lottie." —————

But it crosses my mind that Stitches is not so different from humans in how he achieves happiness. There is a strong in the moment correlation between happiness and engagement in a task involving progress and problem solving.

That's very true, Mommy. It's that sweet spot between alien and relatable, and the issues with identity and morality he lets me explore, that makes Stitches such an interesting character for me. That's why I keep coming back to him. And yes, it's no accident that I brought him back into the story immediately after introducing Tia.

Trip, I want to make a series, is that okay with you? I don't want to steal your fame in any way or copy without permission. I love the series btw!

You don't need anyone's permission to be creative, Amber. I hardly have a monopoly on Animal Crossing fanfiction, let alone gameplay commentary. And I love seeing people on Miiverse developing their skill and passion at media creation. Absolutely go for it! And I'm very glad you've been enjoying the series so much so far. It's that kind of feedback that makes the work worthwhile.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure. I mean, people usually don't like it when people copy. I might start today.

I'm a bit late to the party, but this was cute! I know that he's technically an ancient golem, but seeing a little teddy bear discuss his thoughts on kantain and existentialist theories just seems so precocious and adorable. >v<
