    Should I do it just as they fire the Cannon while Boosting? When I've tryed using Bombs on the first Gun Ship they tend to be a tiny bit too far...

    I'll have to go back and play that level again - I don't remember having much trouble. I tend to tap boost repeatedly, rather than holding it in. That way my boost meter never fully runs out. Not sure if that will help you, but its worth a mention.
