    The game is too much for older 3ds models to handle. Only New 3ds and New 3dsXL models can open other apps while the game is suspended.

    There are actually a few easy ways to tell if it is new. When you have it opened, is the volume slider on the top screen left side? The New 3DS has it there. Also, when opened, are you putting the game in from below, or behind and up top? The New 3DS switched it to below. Few others but that should be enough to tell.
