Annalise is Today's Client! Let's walk through the process of making her a … European-style tearoom. Eh, I'll keep it classy today.

'You want to build a tearoom, Annalise? You know we already have one of those in town, right. Come to think of it, I wonder how Aria's doing …' "The quaint little vaguely-Japanese place that markets itself to teenagers and young couples? Yes, I've been there. And I was not overly impressed." 'Yeah, I'm still not sure why someone raised in Mexico would decide to open a place like that …'

'She could at least put a traditional Mexican drink on the menu like, uh … Any ideas tiger?' Hot chocolate? '… Wow, how could I forget about hot chocolate!?' I think she already has that, actually … "Uh, I hate to interrupt … do you often get sidetracked like this?" 'Uh … pretty much.' Yeah, sorry.

Sorry about that, Annalise. "You need not apologize. I would not be a good host if I discouraged lively discussion." I don't know. I'm not sure whether Aria should act more stereotypical was all that good a topic. "Any topic can lead to an interesting discussion, Mayor. All that matters is who's having it." Erm, if you say so. Right, so are we going for a UK tearoom … "No. More of a French salon."

"You know what a salon is?" Of course. This isn't my natural hair colour, after all. … Basically an intellectual dinner party, right? "There wasn't typically a meal, but that's not far from the mark. A salon is an informal gathering to discuss intellectual topics, with guests carefully selected by the salonnière, or hostess, to ensure an interesting discussion." Hm? So only women held salons?

"In practice, yes. A man could host a similar discussion, but it would inevitably be far more formal. And a woman would certainly not likely be invited. In Enlightenment France, they were not even allowed visit a coffeehouse!" Are you French? "My family is. And proudly so! To think my ancestors may have heard Voltaire and Rousseau debate the nature of humanity! I wish I had lived in those times."

On the other hand, these times have the internet. And much less Bubonic Plague … "I have always admired strong women. And women who ran these salons definitely fit the bill. They had to be not only well-read and -connected enough to choose their guests well, but also intelligent and wise enough to lead the discussion! Discussions with still shape our thinking today."

"I know it'll be hard living up to that tradition, but I'm prepared to do my best. I think it's poised to make a comeback." Really? "Yes. There's a lot to be said for face-to face discussion. A lot less bile and cries of 'FIRST', for one. But more than that, it has a casual immediacy and intimacy that really allows ideas to flow! That's what made the salons so influential."

"And in practical terms, what will make this so profitable! Just think, people itching for a good discussion will schedule a visit in the afternoon or evening and show up for tea and a chat. They won't know who they'll be talking with or what views they'll have, only that they too are open to discussion. Wouldn't that be a wonderful time?" Well, I could see that going very wrong very easily …

"Yes, I'm not leaving out the possibility of clashing viewpoints. But it's the job of the salonnière to ensure this results in lively discussion, and not fisticuffs, just as it was then. People these days desperately need to get out of their echo chambers and really understand to other viewpoints. If my little salon can help with that, then I'll be happy I've lived up to that legacy."

Huh, that actually does sound like a good idea if you put it that way. Good luck, Annalise! "So, when can I pencil you in, Mayor?" Oh, um … "I'm sure a bold leader like yourself would relish a good debate!" Thanks, but a "bold leader" like myself is also … very busy. "Oh …" Uh, then again, my Sunday evenings have been free ever since my magic tutor … yeah. So why not? "Hah! I look forward to it!"

Lottie, when did you … 'My question first, tiger.' Oh, uh … Yeah, of course. It'll be fun. 'Yeah! Just be ready. I'm gonna debate the pants off you!' It's not a competition. A-and the pants stay on!

Thank you for giving me a quick Enlighenment-era test review before my midterms... Even if you didn't mean it, haha.
