Is it worth the hype?

I've never played a dragon quest game, but everyone I know who loves the series say this one is the best! Is 8 really that good?? If it is that good someone should hook a brother up with a download code :]

    7 is better but since you have never played a DQ game 8 is a great starting point

    8 was great on ps2 and i just started 3ds version yesterday and i can tell u its just as great as before if not better.one thing u have to know about DQ series is its very old school meaning classic turn based and lots of grinding when u reach the higher lvls if u can handle that then this is the jrpg for u. ps.hope u try it its a really good game :]

    The only real negative would probaly be the graphics are a slight downgrade like in the picture there are trees in the background but they don't apear in till u get close so they pop in but its not to annoying if u can get used to it.its only 40 bucks instead of 60 like most games so thats a plus.

    Yes, it really is that good. Great art, great music, great writing and solid, well-paced gameplay. Well worth paying full price for. I'd rate this one better than DQ7 (which is also a great game).

    Imo it is the best in the series that i've played and is definitely a great choice to start with for newcomers since compared to 7 it has a much better story pacing and story in general, interesting characters that are more memorable, and a fun to use skill tree system. It has that DQ charm that makes it feel like an actual DQ game. 7 isn't terrible and is an ok game, but its story pacing is slow-

    -and majority of the game is just a fetch quest to me with some interesting small stories in between the search for fragments that u need to collect to explore hidden islands of the past and even in the present. Also DQ8 has superb voice acting.
