BotW Timeline Placement Theory (Final Version): After new info being released and research being done, it's time to make the final revision to my timeline placement theory. In no way should this theory be taken as confirmation of actual placement. Feel free to discuss after complete theory is posted in comments.

I initially thought it was in the Downfall timeline directly after OOT but before ALTTP, but why problem with it is that the old woman says Hyrule's history is also the history of the Calamity Ganon, so it implies multiple attacks occurred over the ages. That said, I could argue it takes place long after FSA in the Child Timeline with that Ganon breaking free of the Four Sword, or...

I have heard that perhaps the sea levels decreased, returning Hyrule. One of the biggest pieces of evidence was the fact you can find sea salt high on the mountains nowhere near an ocean, perhaps referencing the Great Sea. My personal theory is that it is after Four Swords Adventures in the Child Timeline.

@Knight I can still see after AoL, but recent trailers are shifting my view to the sealing war era, but post AoL is still a good possibility.

... in the Downfall timeline during the Era of Decline generations before the original LOZ; this can explain how Ganon was resurrected after his death in the Oracle games, and how Hyrule was already in ruin before he came to power in the original game. Thoughts?

@V if we go by the number of attacks by Ganon, the Downfall timeline has the most, sitting at 4-6 times depending on what games count. Only really 1 possibly 2 times in the child timeline.

@V it also appears to me that Ganon had to be dealt with twice before ALttP. Once after the Hero's downfall and again during the sealing war, making ALttP the 3rd time in the downfall timeline Ganon attacked Hyrule.

I mean I guess. But I just feel it is after FSA. That fountain that is clearly TP's Castle Town's can't be a coincidence. The geography seems similar to FSA's if you ask me. Also, it is clear the Child timeline is among the most technological advanced sections. Look at TP's cannons. In this way, the technology of the game can't come from the Decline Era.

I'll admit that a lot of the information we have so far contradicts a lot of the timelines. In the end, we'll just have to wait and see if BotW reveals it's placement or we get confirmation direct from the development staff.

@Archangel That's actually a valid point. ALTTP's and OOT's lore contradict each other a bit when it comes to Ganons fall and rise. When the hero was defeated, one piece of lore states the Imprisoning War commence shortly after, while another states Ganon was immediately imprisoned. So I suppose Ganon was temporarily sealed after Link's defeat, and the Sages gathered their strength for war?

Ganon did return after LA and before ALBW. Legendary Hero restored Hyrule and the Sacred Realm at the end of ALttP then went on his adventures. In ALBW is revealed that Ganon was sealed with the Triforce of Power. So at some point between ALttP and ALBW, Ganon returned, got the Triforce of Power, and was sealed.

Personally I don't think BotW will cover this part of the story, but I thought it was worth mentioning

@Matteo Look at the "Bubble Trap" in the Eastern and Desert Palaces in ALttP. There is technology there as well. The Beamos also show up in ALttP, which is a carry over from OoT. Technology still existed that early in the Downfall Timeline.

Not to nitpick, but this is a hypothesis. Not a theory. And Nintendo could have just created a whole new timeline since it's not somethingg they're really serious about. But we'll find out on March 3rd.

@V That's what it looks like to me. The sages knew that the imprisonment wouldn't last and went to gather the Knights to help them seal Ganon.

I just don't think we can really toss any of these timelines out just yet. Not enough is truly known. However, I think I remember reading that BotW takes place after the most recent Zelda game. And that could mean, depending on what is counted, Skyward Sword! But that really doesn't make sense. However, if this interview is right, then it could also mean after Triforce Heroes.

I don't remember OoT mentioning anything on Ganon's imprisonment. I know TP did. However, that is in another timeline.

Another note pertaining to the lack of technology in the downfall timeline. It is possibly due to the fact that the technology was corrupted and turned against their creators, that the citizens of Hyrule shunned the use of it fearing a repeat of events.

The most recent non remake game would be Triforce Heroes or if truly main story game, A Link Between Worlds, so still pointing at downfall timeline in that regard. I will say that this is all just my opinion. I'm not right or wrong and you are not right or wrong. Nintendo will place this game where ever they feel like it and they are the boss in that regard. What they say, goes.

I think it's a brand new Link, unless it's a direct sequel. And why can't it be a convergence? All the planets line up and times come together. Why not? And you can't rely on the fountain for timeline placement.
