    I'm pretty sure those are all science fiction shows … "Yeah, but the science ain't the focus. They're really all about the interactions of an ensemble cast stuck in a big vehicle together. Like a road trip in space! And even the spacey stuff is mostly just there as justification! You could set it in a cruise ship in the Caribbean for all it matters. Probably wouldn't be as exciting, but …"

    Does this seem like a good start? I know the star has a lot of blue feathers, so I figured I should riff off that. "Yeah, this is great! I could frame some nice shots with those tanks. We could call them, ah … fuel cells!" On the bridge!? That seems like a liability. "As I was saying, Einstein, once you got the ship, we need to fill out the crew. That's the real meat of the show."

    Oh, they could be part of the inertial dampening system … "Hey, focus! First you need a captain. Someone who can anchor the crew, and make big decisions for the group. There are two main ways you can go with this. You got the 'standard leader': kinda bland, great with people, mostly there to help everyone else shine. And you got the 'hero': a big personality whose development drives the plot."

"After that, you ask yourself what roles your ship needs: every ship needs an engineer and a doctor; bigger ships need a dedicated pilot; ships on REALLY long journeys need farmers; that sort of thing!"

    "Then you fill those roles out with as diverse and colourful a cast of characters you can! The more different viewpoints and backstories you have, the better! Generally you want about four to seven mains, but you can go a lot bigger than that. Just make sure everyone can talk to everyone else, give them all episodes where they can be the star, and these things practically write themselves!"
