I am thinking yes! If they patented a design already it means they have been already contemplating on releasing a new product & now with the Switch out, as Nintendo had feared, it gives Sony some time now to steal more ideas & make their product better should they decide to release it! :-) I find with Sony VS. Nintendo when it comes to handhelds it is the old Beta VS. VHS debate!

Beta was always technically better but VHS was cheaper to produce & offered more content on it thus VHS won out! In this case Beta is Sony & VHS is Nintendo! I don't think Sony is going to let Nintendo run away with a Switch like idea! They would be their best competitor. The only way Microsoft would get into the battle is if they created the equivalent of the Joy-Cons & made a mini Surface+.

BTW, on the Sony topic.. I read that starting soon some PS 4 games are coming to PCs as well so even Sony is jumping on the PC game bandwagon like what Microsoft started doing with their "Play Anywhere" titles they started with back in 2016! Everyone likes stealing each other's ideas.. Microsoft does it the most! :-)

The last response from Sony about a PS 5 is that they don't know if there ever would be a PS 5 and especially no time soon because they just released a new PS 4 revision last year with the PS 4 Slim & the PS 4 Pro.. they would be shooting themself in the foot if they released a PS 5 anytime soon! That's where that new Switch-like device would come into play!

Microsoft has a need & a want to release the "Scorpio" as the XBOX One & to some extent even the XBOX One S is still technically inferior to the base level PS 4 but Sony currently has no need for a PS 5! Sony does have a need for a new handheld though!

I can't see Sony getting involved in another handheld device, At present they have the home console lead Nintendo have the portable lead Both are growing their respetive markets weekly . By making a portable Sony woud strain develpment teams and thin out features for PS4 . it wont happen , look how Nintendo struggled with two hardware devices. Sony = Home console Nintendo = Handheld gaming --

Microsoft = Home Console / Media unit In all honesty i think Nintendo has left the Home console market- handhelds have always been their strength. The Switch is a handheld , just cause it connects to a tv via hdmi does not make it a home console - tablets do the same , my wikipad included. Neo Geo X is a handheld and connects to TV via a hdmi hub. Sony wins home console market -

I doubt it when they already have a 50 million ps4, a handheld really isn't necessary.

Depends if the Switch is a success long term, hopefully if so they'll consider it. No reason they couldn't produce for both markets as they have enough first and second party studios not to mention third party support.

@Sertes - In a perfect world, that would be the case! But you have to look at it this way.. Sony has 53 million customers with the PS 4 ready to support Sony. Sony VR has only hit 900,000 - 1 million in sales & PS 4 sales are slowing. Nintendo Switch currently has sales momentum & Microsoft will reveal XBOX Scorpio at E3 with it's launch in the fall & will be better then PS 4 Pro!

Sony will not launch a PS 5 anytime soon as like I said before, they just launched 2 new models last year & will be shooting themselves in the foot if they launch a PS 5 within the next 2 or so years! The PS Vita is all but dead, especially in North America so where is the only market they can enter a new product into? The "handheld" market to bring their handhelds up to PS4/VR quality!

The leak of Sony's Switch like patent means they have potentially been working on something new & with the Switch's initial sales success, Sony is not going to let Nintendo run away unrestricted in that market especially when Sony has 53 million users ready to try their next great thing! The longer Sony waits, the more of a head start Nintendo gets!

Sony currently doesn't have anything to really highlight this year's up & coming E3 besides new games, they certainly aren't going to reveal a new version of Sony VR so what better then come out with a new Switch-like device, even if it is to announce it & have it come out the following year! Sony surprised us with how quick they released the PS 4 Pro, they can do it again with a handheld device!

Sony can make a device better than the Switch. PS Vita is technically better than the 3DS but it doesn't matter since Sony has no games. Sony and Microsoft for that matter needs real IPs to sell. Cut n paste sandbox shooters r losing steam. Nintendo wins in the game dept.

Everyone still saying the switch will flop is just lying to themselves. Well, maybe the switch will flop... but the only place it will flop is to the top. The Switch will Flop to the Top!

@ZombieXP - There are other similar products as well it's just that these companies don't have the AAA rating that Nintendo does nor the popular game IPs to make their products successful in a mass market! The Switch's success is yet to be determined! Initial sales are to tech-heads, Nintendo diehards & Nintendo fans that probably skipped the Wii U which STARTED OFF good for the most part too!
