Wendy is Today's Client. Let's walk through the process of making her a vinyl fantasy! "Oh, wow. Your puns are worse than my dad's!" … I thought it was clever.

'… A record store.' "Yep!" 'You want to build a record store. In 2017. Really? I know there was a hipster fad for them a while back, but …' "F-fad!? Vinyls have been hot again since 2007! They're still pretty niche, but they're basically here to stay at this point." 'Still, are you sure there's enough of market to support you?' I wouldn't worry about that, Lottie. '… Tiger?'

A lot of people I've designed for have record collections. And I know Jacques is a huge fan of vinyl. "Jacques?" A local club owner, and good friend. He's actually getting married soon … 'It's probably best that you handle this one then, tiger. I'll just be here streaming Pokémon soundtrack remixes on my phone.' There's a lot of good non-game music out there, Lottie … 'So?'

"Do you have a collection?" Well, I do have the complete works of K.K. Slider, but … "Ah! You're a big K.K. fan?" Yeah, I guess so. He's much better in concert. But I actually got most of my records from the guy himself. I never really set out to start a record collection. Most of the time I just listen to stuff online. "You mean … s-streamed!?" Yeah. I really can't hear the difference in quality.

"Ah. You're not an audiophile? This might be a tough sell." What do you mean by "sell"? "Oh, you're buying something from me before you go home. Just so you know." I-I don't have a choice? "Nope! I mean, yeah, technically. But I really, really want to make a sale on my first day, so I'm not gonna let you go that easy!" Great … "Don't take it like that! I just know I have something you'll love!"

Even so … "I'm guessing you've heard all the analog/digital arguments from your club-owner friend already, so I won't bother with that. Truth is, what the music's printed on doesn't matter half as much as the quality of your playback equipment. What's your rig like?" Oh, I have a jukebox. It's really classy … "A … jukebox? Okay, what kind of speakers you got on that?" … Whatever it came with?

"Wow. With a rig like that, you'd might as well be using a pair of cheap earbuds!" What's wrong with earbuds? … I think records are wasted on me. "No! No, you're just not my usual kinda customer, that's all. There has to be some reason you'd want … Ah! That's it!" What's it? "You finished your K.K. collection, right? Why'd you do that?" It's just … because otherwise it'd feel incomplete.

"But if just you wanted to listen to all his songs, you could have bought them as MP3s. Or just record a live show: K.K. is infamously tolerant of bootlegs." His label isn't … "But it's different when it's a physical object, isn't it? It's not just sound anymore, it's something you can hold! You can touch! You can actually feel the waveform carved into the PVC!"

"Ah, but don't actually do that. It'll wreck the groove. But my point is that you don't really feel like you 'own' a song if it's just a file on your computer. I think it's that physicality, more than the actual sound, that attracts people to vinyl. That, and it's a lot more fun to hunt for hidden gem in a shop than just googling something!" I … guess that makes sense. "Hey, give it a try!"

Okay, but … … Is this … John Coltrane … playing WITH Thelonious Monk!? "Yeah, Live at Carnegie Hall." I-I love those guys! I didn't know they … … Wendy? Ring me up. "Just that? We do have a lot more jazz …" Oh, I'll be back. I'm starting to think my collection has way too much K.K.

This was such a fun episode! My sister is actually a huge fan of records- mainly just because she finds the way record players work and sound to be interesting. Her collection is mostly Cat Stevens and David Bowie albums on vinyl right now, as well as a variety of random 45's.
