Plus you're left hanging to find out what women do.

And the word "meerkat" just sort of pops out at you. Apparently there's a long story about this meerkat? At the circus? Curiosity: engaged.

It sets a humorous tone, but also establishes a conflict in the very first sentence. That semicolon cuts like a sword in itself.
