Technically, Those are the "Super-Emeralds" They originally appeared in Sonic 3 & Knuckles and can be obtained by collecting the Original Chaos-Emeralds from Sonic 3, Then entering a Giant Multicolored Ring throughout the Sonic & Knuckles half of the game.

And if you collect the Super-Emeralds, You'll become Hyper-Sonic, (Sonic's version of Super Saiyan 2) Hyper Knuckles & Super-Tails respectively.

Hyper-Sonic Looks like Super-Sonic but flashing in all the colors of the Emeralds. And has a Dash ability that acts like the Metal-Blades from Megaman & can destroy all Badniks in site in a flash. (Literally) And combine it with the Electric/Magnet Shield, Then Sonic truly becomes Overpowered.
