字は子義。母の恩義を返すため、黄巾賊に襲われた孔融を救援し、劉備から兵を借りて、管亥率いる黄巾賊を蹴散らす。その後、劉ﾖｳ配下として孫策軍と対峙。孫策と一騎討ちを行い、その武勇を孫策に認められる。劉ﾖｳ軍壊滅後も孫策に抗戦したが敗北。３日間の猶予を乞い、旧劉ﾖｳ軍の残兵三千を率いて再度孫策に降伏した。合肥の合戦で自分の策を張遼に逆用され、戦死。死　ぬ間際に「男子として生まれながら、志半ばで死　なねばならないのか」と叫んだ。尚、史実では赤壁の合戦の直前に病死したが、臨終の言葉は上記に同じ。
