My husband has y and has talked me into getting x as he has explained to me how trading is the way to get an instant evolution of some pokemon. In addition, there are certain special pokemon that may be aquired in each version.

    Yup. In addition, some Pokémon will only evolve if they hold certain items while being traded. For example, Swirlix needs to hold a Whipped Dream and Spritzee needs to hold a Sachet.
