Oh? I didn't know pickles meant so much to you. "Well, I'm not a pickle-maniac like Dill. And I definitely didn't think anyone else would care. But I just had this weird idea about a competition pickler whose knowledge of how to make a perfect pickle gave him the insight solve a tricky murder mystery. I never expected a publisher would pick it up." No? Who wouldn't pick up a tricky pickle mystery?

"Heh, thanks. Conveniently enough, my publisher's based out of this town." Is that why you moved here? "Not entirely. I really just need to get out of the city." What? Y-you're not in legal trouble, are you? You could talk to my uncle … "No, no, I just need a change of scenery. I have a bit of a … creative block, I guess you could call it." Ah, that's even worse! I don't wanna see Dill cancelled!

We gotta save him! "Y-you do understand he's not a real person, right? Don't even think about turning this into a Misery scenario …" Ah, s-sorry, "Besides, I actually have the opposite problem. Dill's story was supposed to stop with the first book. I keep trying to write new characters and scenarios but … somehow they never seem to come together. It's so frustrating!"

"Meanwhile, I keep finding new scenarios where my friendly pickler can shine. So I write those down, and before I know it, I have five published books with a sixth in the pipeline. Another one already? Ah, what case is he handling this time!? Will we finally learn more about the evil agricorp's conspiracy!? Wait, don't spoil me. But will we? "I-I'm talking about being stuck in a rut, Lottie!"

You want me to … help you stop writing Dill stories? "Well, if this keeps up, I'll probably end up killing him off …" Ah, p-point taken! And I guess I'd enjoy your other stories too. But I'm really not a writer. I know a writer, but … No, now really isn't the time for an existential crisis. Hm …

Well, it sounds to me like Dill came from a really personal place. "It's a really silly concept, truth be told …" Yeah, but it still brings up those old childhood memories, right? And it comes through in the work too. You can tell that Dill's craft is more than just pickled vegetables to him. There's a nostalgia there, like it helps him connect to something deeper. That's why I love the character.

I have to wonder why NOBODY has caught onto Lottie's fourth wall mentions. Like, she does it all the time, sometimes in front of the same people, but noone notices.

I heard that great characters aren't just fiction, but a part of the author that they choose to give a voice to. So I guess that means Dill's a part of you too, huh. "I … guess, maybe. I still don't see how this helps me." Well, you have other parts of you too, right? You're not just a pickle freak … "I-I'm not a pickle freak!" Diana? You're chopping cucumbers right now.

"I-I have to get them in the brine while they're fresh! You understand …" Right. What I'm saying is, if you want to make another character as interesting as Dill, you probably won't find it just coming up with concepts. But you could try looking inside yourself to see if you have any other voices trying to be heard. "Hrm …" O-or I could be wrong! I'm no author. It just … sounds good to me.

"Lottie? I … think you might be onto something." Really? "Yes. Coming here really was a good idea. This space will really help me think." So you'll send me an advance copy of your new nov… "No." … O-okay, then … how about some pickles? "Ah, why not. I can spare a jar." Yes! I'll treasure it forever! "I-I'd rather you eat them before they go bad …"

Such a unique formula for a series of novels! However, as marketable as these veggie tales might be, it turns out I'm not a big fan of cucumbers. Or murder. So apologies to Diana Hunt, but I think I'll give her art a miss. ...I may have stretched that one too far...

I was talking with Tay before how researching a character helps when finding a story hook. This is a good example: Diana's special talent is listed as "writing about pickles". Jack: Sik and Nook already know what she is. Digby doesn't, but is certain something's wrong with her. As for everyone else, casual fourth-wall breaks are as much a part of the Animal Crossing series as furniture leaves.

On research, it turns out such interests are more widespread than initially expected. Other pickle novel enthusiasts include retired baseball player Sparro, superhero confidant Colton, avian attorney Amelia, and... uh... the Queen of Cats?! Did they HAVE pickles back then?!

I seriously want to read one of Diana's Dill novels now! That's quite the creative premise! I like how this one really centered around how the best stories are personal to the author, too. There's definitely a lot of truth in that, and I thought it was sweet how Diana's happened to stem back to memories of her Grandmother.
