I thought up a theory on Dark Link's origins. Now, to be clear here, most of the games seem to suggest that Dark Link is a trial that Link has to overcome and I don't disagree with that, but I do enjoy my musings about the timeline. So, my theory is that the Dark Link in Ocarina of Time is actually the fallen hero in the Downfall Timeline.

Or it could just be ocarina of time director going hmmmm we need a battle here. Hey what about bringing back shadow link in Zelda?

  • Dark Link is never described as one of Ganon's servants but instead is a trial Link must overcome in order to continue.

  • As of now, the only canon information we have about Dark Link is from his armor in Breath of the Wild, it says that it is a creature that was born from the darkness, so its almost official that he is not human. But I always like to read about other people theories.

  • Criticism is welcome. My theories do tend to be more interesting rather than plausible. Actually, I do have another theory on Dark Link. I came up with it before the official timeline was released, but a tiny piece of evidence did come out in the new game that supports it.

  • I might share that earlier theory later. As for this theory, the reason I came up with it is because I'm always looking for a way to legitimatize the events that created the Downfall Timeline. As it is now, the Hero of Time's death never appears in an actual game. The only reference to it is in Hyrule Historia. So, I'm always trying to find the connection.

  • And as I don't like considering it a what-if timeline, I'm always on the lookout for a time traveling event that can create the timeline. If we consider the Downfall Timeline to be the original, then the Hero of Time becoming Dark Link and traveling back in time accomplishes both my goals because now the fallen hero does appear in an actual game (as Dark Link) and the split in the timelines is exp

  • Cripes... There actually was a piece of evidence forr this theory. So silly of me to forget. As we know, the Hero's Shade in Twilight Princess is the Hero of Time. This sets a precedent for the Hero of Time assuming a monstrous form after he dies, especially if he dies with regret. Thus, according to my theory, he becomes Dark Link in the Downfall Timeline due to his immense frustration at failing

  • As to why he is in the water temple, obviously it's because the place frustrated the fallen hero as it did the rest of us, so he wanted to take out his anger on everything there! Also, Navi's description, I believe, is "Defeat yourself." This is a little contrived, I admit, but one would expect Navi to say defeat your dark side rather than this, so Navi is saying that this is Link, but from a

  • I always like seeing a different way to look at something. I could post my own theory if you like.

  • @Knight Sure, go ahead.

  • Dark Link- Neither enemy nor friend. Dark Link appears as a dark doppelgänger of Link but this does not mean he is a villain. The two most famous examples where Dark Link is fought are in Adventure of Link and Ocarina of Time.

  • In AoL the Triforce of Courage is hidden in the Great Palace. The final test before a person can claim the holy relic they must defeat its guardian, Thunderbird, and then faces his own shadow to win possession of the Triforce of Courage. In this case its the Hero of Hyrule's shadow he must face.

  • In OoT the Water Temple has a special illusionary room which appears to be a outside, misty, water filled area with a small island and lone tree in the middle. Dark Link materializes from the Hero of Time's reflection in the water and me must 'conquer himself'.

  • Dark Link is never described as one of Ganon's servants but instead is a trial Link must overcome in order to continue. In both cases Dark Link has the same amount of health and attack power as their respective Link.

    Yeahs0
  • Dark Link does appear in TP during a flashback sequence told to Link by Lanayru. But this more of a visual tool as the Dark Links are used to symbolize the Interlopers trying to conquer the Sacred Realm.

  • Shadow Link is a different story. The ones in FSA are Shadow Links created by the Dark Mirror to cause trouble for Link
