The differences between Checking and Countering

Im pretty sure I've made a post like this before, but its amazing how many people here still like to throw out phrases 'it counters this', without actually knowing what countering actually is. Some dont even know what checking is. So, Im making this post to explain the difference between 'countering' and 'checking', with some examples.

  • I like how I used MegaGross as an example, then the next day it gets Suspect Tested. This isnt a joke. Mega Meta is being suspect tested. Expect a last-minute analysis of it soon :P

  • Is Alolan Marowak a counter? No Patrick, Alolan Marowak is not a Counter. *Raises hand* Celesteela is not a Counter either.

  • I see someone saw all that stuff on red dot. Celesteela isn't a Mega Metagross counter, but it checks it decently enough. Just gotta watch out for Thunder Punch.

  • IMO, a Bulky Mega Scizor can counter Mega Metagross.

    Yeahs0
  • @Red: It does, but Mega Sciz is pretty much the only solid counter it has. Even then, if MegaGross gets Attack raises with Meteor Mash, it can beat Sciz 1v1.

  • Oh yeah, and apparently, Mega Meta can Run HP Fire to take out Mega Scizor. And you were saying a Special Meta set was not possible to that user the other day?

  • I never said HP Fire Gross was unviable. Just a fully special attacking Metagross was bad.

  • Instead of Hard-Counter > Counter > Check > Soft-Check, you can use Guaranteed Switch-In > Situationnal Switch-In > Not a Switch-In (abbreviated GSI > SSI > NSI) which pretty much covers the same spectrum while being self-explanatory. Not saying you should, but you can :v

  • Yeah, but Countering and Checking are widely used terms in competitive pokemon.

    Yeahs0
  • I never knew the terms in depth, thank you. What do you think is the best competitive pokemon?

  • @Kaelan: If you're talking about across all pokemon, Mega Rayquaza is the undisputed king, with Primal Groudon being second to it. If you're talking about in terms of OU, Id say either Mega Metagross (though being suspected atm) due to its great combination of power, bulk, speed, and coverage, Greninja due to sheer offensive pressure, or Lando-T for it's versatility.

  • @AAA, I know this is unrelated but I'll ask you anyway. Why did you say to only train 224 SpA EVs on Pheromosa? Why not 252?

    Yeahs1
    Played
  • I believe 224 lets you have a single point higher of SpA than Speed, letting you get a Beast Boost in SpA, then you can put the rest in HP to give you a slight bit of bulk to help survive stuff like AshNinja's Water Shuriken after a boost or Mega Metagross' Bullet Punch

  • I think Im just gonna make a post about what doesnt make sense tomorrow, mostly mechanics-wise, but maybe move-wise, too.

    Yeahs1
  • Doesn't 224 EVs give you 203 SpA and Isn't that what their Spe is with 252 EVs?

  • @Ryan: Not at Level 100. Their Special Attack is 402 and their speed is at 401. Even if they're even, the SpA will still get boosted because if two stats are even, the first stat will get boosted. @J: All right, though can we wait until tomorrow?
