  • Don't be afraid to look at references if you need them. The more you use them the less you will need them. And it's a lot easier to simplify the forms if you know how they look realistically.

  • @Kay- I try not to look at too many references, but I do try and see if I can get all the angles of the character so that I can put all that looks right into it. And yeah, I try to go realistic in a way (sometimes. More times not), but I'm gonna keep practicing. @yuzuu- Thank you very much! I appreciate compliments, they're like my motivation. But I have ways to motivate myself just in case. XD

  • OH, MAYU, HELLO XD I didn't notice the Mii change and stuff (I got that a lot in the earlier days of Miiverse. Surprising how it all settled to Asriel and it just ended and now it's just ol TrumooPuff. XD)

  • There's nothing wrong with using references. Most professional artists do. And artists recommend learning real anatomy because once you know that then you can change it however you want. By learning the real anatomy it makes it easier to draw stylized.

  • Ah. I understand. I know a little bit of human anatomy, but not all of it. So I use what I know from my body. I use my body as a reference too sometimes. (Depending on the size of said character) I really needed that tip. I never knew if I was looking at too many references, or not enough. Thank you, Kay

  • Yeah, It's been something I've been figuring out, myself, recently. And I feel like a too many people think that using references is somehow cheating, but it's not. It's a perfectly valid approach. Just as long as it's not direct copying

  • Tbh I had the same thought, too. I wasn't scared to use a reference, but I didn't want to use too many.

  • Use as many as you think you will need. Some of my teachers at MIAD have talked about how they have whole boards of references on some websites. It might not even be for a thing they're working on, it just stood out to them so they save it for later use. I have 8 images pulled up on my computer just for one characters OUTFIT that I've been designing. It's totally fine as long as you don't steal

  • Yeah I heard about the outfit thing. XD Well, I'll keep in mind that it's okay to use as much as I need. And stealing? Pah! The only thing I steal is people's attention sometimes!... That and food. I get really hungry sometimes

  • You're getting better, John! Meanwhile I've been feeling like I'm bad. A little more practice and inspiration will me improved more. I feel like I've been losing inspiration.
