Fuuka thoughts.

An anime I just finished. Fuuka is about a girl named Fuuka, and she doesn't know what to do with her life. She meets the MC and he convinces her to go into music. She winds up dragging him and others into starting a band. It's a music anime, one would guess right? Well, music is like 40% of Fuuka. The other 60% is...love triangles. Which would be fine, if it wasn't, y'know, 60%.

  • This is a romance show, what's the big deal with having lots of romance? Well, sure, but this show's plot is about starting a band consisting of people (that are not love interests) and making it big. You don't even learn the name of the band until episode 10. Out of 12, guys. They only say it like twice after it's started halfway through the show.

  • Speaking of dissapointments halfway through... Let's talk about Fuuka the character for a moment. I'm not gonna lie, Fuuka was best girl for me before the band lifts off. She was outgoing, determined, genuine, and a bit of a tomboy. After the love subplot becomes the main plot, she turns into this distant and afraid girl who becomes an obstacle/conflict to the story.

  • This would be great, if the story was told with her as the lead character and from her point of view. But it's told from this generic protagonist who's only defining traits are he's nice and awkward. You don't get to see what Fuuka is going through at all. She's the one going through all the drama, but they break the rule of "show, don't tell" all the time with her.

  • The other girl in the love triangle gets more development than both the MC and Fuuka, and she's a supporting character! You don't learn anything about the other band members. One is a boy loving pretty boy who was very useful before the halfway point although it was all for nothing it feels. One's a girl who is related to a famous rockstar. The last one is a guy who used to do track. That's it.

  • You learn how Fuuka and the MC feel about each other really early in the show. Which makes it confusing why everything following that happens. Because they both know how they feel about the other too. Fuuka moreso, but it's painfully obvious they like each other. But they pretend like the MC didn't pretty much say "You give my life meaning, I want to stand by you" directly to her.

  • That's all the bad things I have to say for the most part. The show is still enjoyable since I really wanted to know how it would end and the first half was really great for me. The reason the second half fell off was because of the bad mix of romance and trying to portray how being in a band is like. The ending was kinda meh, but there was some closure at least.

  • Although, if the romance aspect was a show on it's own and the band aspect was a show on it's own, they would probably be good shows. Even great. I think that's all I need to say about Fuuka.
