    He is not a gem.However,He worked in a Homeworld resistance group.He is an excellent fighter.His Homeworld war experience was one of the things that helped him gain his rank of commander.

    He didn't get it from the gems.He got it in 2324.Very,very long story short,when he was a sergeant in a war between an alien race called"Zyntros",He was promoted to commander.Commanders are given the choice between an elite starbase or an elite starship.He chose starship.
