regarding paid online service for the Switch console: it's ok for me to pay €20 /year. But: this package includes a service which you can only use when you have a different device (Smartphone), and this has nothing to do with the Switch console. →

Well, obviously Nintendo pays to DeNa for all their services, it's not like DeNa do it for free... And let's suppose that it is actually the case, Nintendo gets all the money and DeNa absorb all the cost ^-^u, it just happens that Nintendo is, if i remember right, the 2nd mayor shareholder of DeNa... So it would be kind of like hurting yourself.

The payment for the online service starts in 2018 (there is no more concrete date, it could be January 1st or in September), but before of that, in summer/autumn we will have available the famous mobile app... It's far from ideal and shouldn't be the case at all, but i think it's not *as* bad as it looks... you are going to need a android or ios (apple) smart device, which you shouldn't...

but you wouldn't need any data plan or even a sim card, *probably* any device (like a tablet, or even a mobile without a sim card (so you have to pay 0 to a mobile carrier) with the app and a wifi connection would get the job done; the smart device would use the same wifi connection that you would use with your Switch.

of course it's all about business. Making a deal to 'help' others to help yourself. I read that others who have a Smartphone are also not happy about this plan. When my old cellphone won't work anymore then I will eventually buy a Smartphone. Thank you for the info Neopancho :) - but still I don't buy a Tablet just for this app.

I never cared about voice chat anyway. But Nintendo should update the Switch in this way that we can at least organize game invites lobbies etc. for online play. Also it is strange that they charge the same fee from players who can't use all the online features.

I wish there would be more in-game chat with writing, like in Animal Crossing.

I don't think making DeNa absorb the cost while having stock would hurt Nintendo at all. Sure, they bought the stock, but they're getting a big technical service along with the stock. PLUS, they now have control in DeNa and have a saying in their operations, probably to keep future costs down for them as a customer. They also get returns for DeNa's other businessess as a shareholder. It's smart.

Also, let's say that 10 million Switch users pay for the service. That alone would make around 200 million ($)for Nintendo YEARLY. That could potentionally mean 100 million yearly net income about something we're now getting free. Servers aren't that expensive, especially when there's only data transferred through them in lobbies mostly. The actual gameplay happens router-to-router still.

So having better servers don't magically make the online play better if there's people with slow (in ping) connections playing. Problems in MK8 Deluxe now have more to do with the Switch's own firmware on wifi connections probably, not with "bad" servers. How could it be when gaming happens user-to-user anyway?

Are you sure it's definitely yearly? The day they announced it on the direct he specifically said "monthly" and then he said the first month would be free, these two statements are what made me immediately cancel my preorder!

Also, I called Nintendo UK only a couple of weeks ago and he said it was going to ve £30 a month, I understand that some of those reps have brains the size of a spiders' p★★★puddle and often give bad advice/information, but it's ridiculous if NONE of this is true, I wouldn't have cancelled it otherwise...

Just to add to the PS4 information, it is €40 a month, which also comes with monthly discounts and free games. There is an app for phones, but it's just a message app from what I've heard. But yes, as a person who doesn't own a Smartphone, I would be uncomfortable with the extra fee for a service which would be impossible for me to even use.

They revealed the prices this week for Europe and America. The service will cost 3,99/one month, 7,99/three months, and 19,90/12 months. The euro and dollar prices will be the same. UK prices haven't been revealed yet to my knowledge, but they should be similar I think.

yeah the costs are as Harri mentioned. €20/year is ok for me. It would be ridiculous if Nintendo keeps the P2P online (I can't imagine that). And I really hope they will put an update on the Switch console to invite friends, online lobbies etc.

Server-client model is a lot more expensive to implement though, plus, MK8 and Splatoon are already made using p2p, so they can't really change that anymore. It's deep in the games' code. Biggest reason why I play on Nintendo is the games, and if the added income for them is going to help them deliver, it's fine by me. Just don't forget the single player magic big N!

I hope that Arms will have a fine single player mode, I really liked the testfire so far.

I haven't tested Arms at all. Not my kind of game. If it's anything like Splatoon single player was I think it'll be just fine. I really liked the single player on it, even though it was a bit short with no actual replayability.

So if it actually IS true then I cancelled my preorder because of that idiot on the direct making it sound a lot worse than I thought, and to be fair, he DID say only the first month would be free, not the first year (almost!). So yeah, now I'm pretty p!$$€♂...
