Intimidating Bosses in otherwise cute platformers!

Share platformer Bosses that invoke a less than happy mood, but follow 3 rules: 1.It can't M-Rated,or from games fully intended to scare you this way 2.The design of the Boss must be at least a bit creepy,so it can't just be difficult to defeat 3.Bonus points if the Boss' abilities are horrifying in hindsight, even if the Boss is easy

  • is trippy as well. It flies across the stage by "swimming in the air" with it's skinny limbs and weird "bubble clouds". It can also do a medusa-like stare to inflate Wario and move him to a bottomless pit the player is not careful enough. The only thing making this fight not surreal is the music, which is honestly generic and doesn't suit the fight that well. Although the fight wasn't too...

  • hard for me, other LPers I watched died at least three times against it, in what's an otherwise easy game. The other "intimidating boss" is one that isn't as bizarre as the one I just mentioned, but was a well-made conclusion to an obscure gem that I never got around to finishing until 13 years after I received the game as a gift. (Which was also the game's release date!) Meet the Chronohorn...

  • ,although it never had that name or a name at all in any sources aside from the game's sold-separately strategy guide, making it even more intimidating. To give this Final Boss good context, I need to explain the obscure gem first, which is BLiNX The Time Sweeper. Blinx is one of many cats that works in a Time Factory to fix anomalies in time for many separate worlds, and as a Time Sweeper, he...

  • can manipulate time itself like a VCR, in five different ways: Pause, Rewind, Slow, Fast-Forward, and Record. (I'd prefer this time manipulation over Prince of Persia [2003] & Braid any day!) The game was released back in 2002, and directed by Naoto Oshima, the same guy responsible for Sonic's design the first place! The story for the game itself is very simple, but is also heartwarming at the...

Blinx will die against anything in one hit, but a Retry rewinds time back to before he got hit, and it's good enough to never get you stuck in a death loop!) Now, back to the Chronohorn. Although it appears out of pretty much nowhere, things get serious pretty quickly, as it...

  • sets what events happened earlier aside, and sends Blinx back in time to four of the previous Boss Fights before the final confrontation truly takes place. It's design is other-worldy compared to the other time anomalies that Blinx had to face, and the first thing it does is take all of Blinx's Time Controls away. (Blinx has to collect them back) Throughout the fight, it feels like you're...

  • fighting a god,as the music for the Final Boss is split into 13(!) different variations, switching between each variation each time the Chronohorn is damaged. The Chronohorn can not only create a ridiculous amount of explosives, but it can also use Time Controls against you! Of course, the Chronohorn has it's own arsenal to take you down in a matter of seconds, including bombs, fists, lighting, and ice

  • The arena you fight the Chronohorn on is a floating coliseum where gladiators used to fight each other in,and with how much time unstabilized here,a bright "nova" is under the coliseum at all times. The middle phase is the worst, where it uses a permanent Record to copy itself, and you have to hit both copies in one go. The penultimate phase of the Chronohorn gives it immunity to all of your...

  • Time Controls, but you still have to use one of every Time Control to defeat it. For some odd reason, the Chronohorn tries to suck you and Time Crystals in with an organic tube, and getting sucked in usually means death. Oh, and it can also make the entire coliseum slippery if the "ice bombs" explode. It's all as difficult as it sounds, and not a single LPer had fond memories of fighting it.

  • I remember another creepy boss in my head, but I can't recall what game it's from, so that's all for now! @Porky: Sure! Even if Gigyas is too well-known. Mimi is a good choice as well, but as someone who played SPM, Super Dimentio isn't really creepy in my eyes.

  • Almost forgot about 0 from Kirby's Dreamland 3! Where the eye of 0 pops out and blood flies everywhere as you hit the eye! Yup, 100% deserved an E rating.

  • Oh yeah, fought that one as well! Good choice, considering how it's Kirby 64 variant is too well-known and is an honestly boring fight in comparison to the KD3 variant.

  • Fun story: When I owned Wario World when I was around 8 I got to this boss who was this creepy baby angel doll thing. I was terrified, it was the first time I felt uncomfortable playing a game. It just made these sounds and it just felt...Robotic. No motion felt right. I just felt scared and uncomfortable. I later sold it but now that I'm older, I still regret it to this day.

  • Having played all of Wario World I can tell you that the Boss you're talking about is the Brawl Doll. The Clown-A-Round, a Boss that came in the stage right after, was also creepy, followed up by the Winter Windster I mentioned. That's three creepy Bosses in a row!

  • Well, that is, three creepy Bosses with their own stages in a row. The last Boss in World 2 lacks it's own stage, just like the last Boss of World 1. The miniboss in the penultimate stage was also creepy and bizarre, but I won't spoil it for you if you're planning the play the game again and haven't finished it yet.

  • I'll get Wario World back eventually. Also, there's this thing about Hooktail from TTYD that disturbs me. When you beat him, he eats the audience and regains health. He just eats them. You see them being chewed, and screaming in fear and pain. It always disturbed me. I know when you kill Hooktail the eaten ones escape perfectly fine, but it's the fact we saw them be chewed up that disturbs me.
