Help a first-time cosplayer?

I want to make a cosplay of a armor set from Monster Hunter (reference in my latest Play Journal entry), but I have zero knowledge on what materials to use, I've never sewed a day in my life, and plus my budget would be extremely tight (like $5 a month to put in)... Does anyone have any tips, suggestions, whatever that could help a first-time cosplayer out?

  • That's a lot of foam homeboy it's gonna cost a lot

  • Well, most of that foam would be on the left hand side (where the metal plating is), but I figure the right hand side would be mostly cloth...

  • Of course, the only cosplay things I've ever made have been replicas of weapons out of wood or foamboard (like Oathkeeper, Oblivion, and Ultima Weapon from Kingdom Hearts and Parallel Falchion and Siegfried from Fire Emblem), so when it comes to clothes, I'll probably suck...

  • You can check out a nearby thrift store for stuff like shirts/pants that might go with it. You'll also need stuff like glue and paint, and if you don't have paint for something, you can use tape. Sorry I didn't help much, but I tried. I_I'

  • Felt (material) Might also be useful. It's more on the expensive side though...

  • @Mina~Chan: Sadly, the only thrift store in town is usually closed whenever I go by it.

  • Sorry that happened, you could check for a schedule or contact info! And if you don't mind me asking, are you going to a convention? If so, which one?

  • Not that I know of any. Though I'd love to have a cosplay ready for whenever there was one nearby (or at least use it for Halloween, if nothing else.).

  • At least I can change the color scheme depending on what materials I can find, since that specific armor has four color versions- White with black metal: Giaprey set Blue with silver metal: Velociprey set greenish-tan with silver metal: Genprey set red with bronze metal: Ioprey set. So color-wise, the armor choice is very flexible for cosplay.
