So, as I fail at 3D proportions and some of my friends are working on drawing and complained over having difficulties... Lemme share some of my knowledge with you. 1st hint: Never EVER start off with outlines. Not even professionals do that, and for a reason: It makes screwing up the anatomy way easier. Wanna know why I take so much longer for sketches than others? Because of guidelines.

  • Well, it does seem a bit too... angular? Anyway, I've seen much worse. Like seriously. You don't want to see the stuff my brother produces. And he's four years older than me.

  • is it something like loads of skribbly lines?

  • Yeah, something like that. And I tend to usually tell him his drawings are awful (on the rare occasions he draws something). He knows and doesn't mind. Well, at least he doesn't take multiple hours to actually completely finish something.

  • I'm terrible at drawing people, but I'll still keep trying. I just can't draw noses. XD

  • Well, practice makes perfect as they say. ...Then again, on the topic of my brother... I always was better than him. Even when he was in school already and I still was in Kindergarden. Drawing was the one thing I always bested him at.

  • My brother has absolutely no interest in drawing, he spends nearly the whole day on his computer. XD

  • I draw pictures straight off too! But that's because if you mess up the guidelines, you mess up the drawings... I ALWAYS mess up guidelines, hence never using them! ;)

  • @Patch Noses are difficult, but CHEEKS are the part(s) you should look out for! Shading realistic 3D cheeks are so FREAKING DIFFICULT! D:

  • @??? Well, I actually never questioned that there are people out there capable of drawing stuff well without guidelines. But I was rather referring to beginners. Some tend to start off with outlines and when I see the drawings, I usually notice how extremely deformed the characters are. As if you'd thrown a Jellyfish on massive ground. But if someone can draw well without that, ->

  • then I'd say that's fine. "Don't change what works." as they say. I personally prefer guidelines, though. If I mess up, I can fix it easier and faster. ...And yeah, cheeks are the deviI.

  • I have sometimes problems with the feet.

  • I have problems with ears and hands. The ears always turn out either big or elf-like, and the hand are just atrocities.

  • Hands and feet really aren't easy. As for ears, I usually take use of the fact that: size of ears = space between the tip of the nose and the highest part of the eyebrows

  • After a bit, you usually get a knack for getting the right proportions, because you start to get used to what correct facial proportions look like! You just need practice! ;)
