    You need to buy the items. Grind Meowth for coins, train your team to a high level and go for it. If you don't, you'll likely get knocked out. Remember everyone was given a free Complexity so if you don't use items you'll really struggle to place.

    Maybe he has already used items to do this score. Personally I just can't do anything in this competition without items. My best itemless score was around 6000 and now my highscore is more than 4 times more :)

    It's possible. My itemless score was about 11,000. I can't remember exactly, but it's extremely difficult to place in Europe without items, even with a MAXed team. Unlike last competition (Lucario 2), which was a cakewalk... as if people weren't even trying.
