    No mate, this mode is knockout competition. Basically play until you get beat (a bit like survival mode on beat em ups). Each win progresses to a higher ranked opponent, Im up to level 29 so far with Star Mario but man the matches are getting tight. In addotion to knockout mode there is mega ball rally, Mega battle, classic tennis with not power ups and online multiplayer. There is also an Amiibo.

    training function in which you can level up your Amiibo like in Smash to best suit your style of play. Also if you play doubles online, you can have your levelled up Amiibo as your doubles partner.

    Go for it Scot. It's a great pick-up-and-play title for short bouts of fun. Sure, it's missing some content but don't let the low review scores put you off...also, I'm holding out that Ninty might add that much wished-for tourny-mode in a future update...one can but hope, right?
